I consider it to be unlikely.  It is far easier and quicker to communicate than it is to travel and if we do meet an alien artifact it is more likely to be robotic than an evolved organic lifeform.

In general, I would agree, but I would ask: exactly how complex should a robot have to be before it is considered a life form in its own right?

Given what has I said in your previous thread on the subject about the length of time for travel, and the unlikelihood of regular two way travel between Earth and an extraterrestrial planet, the fist issue is that if they were here, they would probably be stranded here, and are unlikely to be going home any time soon.

The next question is, what do you mean by 'among us'?

If you mean, living somewhere in the depths of the ocean – unlikely, but one cannot dismiss the possibility.

If you mean living in the house next door, and in plain view – then the next question is, what do they look like?

If you are taking the extreme sci-fi approach, that they look like humans – it would be absurdly improbable.  No other species on this planet looks like a human, so why should they?  Humans share 50% of their genes with a banana, I doubt any alien would share any genetic material with humans.  It would be very probable that there entire life chemistry would be totally different from ours, and possibly they would not even contain DNA.

However intelligent I do not think that any robotic structure could be considered to be a lifeform unless it can replicate itself or at least replicate from raw materials the active elements of itself. For example I would accept a mother ship sending out intelligent mechanical "spiders" to investigate its surroundings and bring back raw materials to enable the maintenace (but not the duplication)of the mother ship and the construction of more spiders as a potential lifeform.

For them to be amongst us they would have to have the ability to.

1. Find a way to travel from their planet to ours in a time period that would make any scientific observations of us worthwhile, as there's no point of entering a scientific study if thousands of years will have past before you can return any findings from that study  . And for that to happen they will somehow have to find a way to either travel faster than light or at least find a way to transmit there data faster than c,which as far as we know is impossible.

2 They would somehow have to find a way to change there physical processes and appearances  to look like us, and survive in our environment, taken into account everything from gravity,levels of atmospheric gases, bacteria ,viruses, even the level of of visibility in our atmosphere compared to theirs etc etc.

4 Prevent any contamination of our environment by new bacteria or viruses which they would bring with them.

5 somehow find away to prevent us from seeing there spaceships and evidence of.

The list would go on and on. The best way would be as someone said, send robots but even then they would still have many problems to overcome.

I heard that another form of "aliens" could form long after humans and other life forms have disappeared from the cosmos.  This would be a form of intelligent "life" that would evolve when the stars collapse into a dense, perhaps a silicon bases with constructs capable of forming their own input/output of information circuitry.

Assuming that they can travel faster than c , then perhaps they could just utilize a remote controlled hard light hologram...infection free, contamination free too.

I would have thought that it wouldn't be too tricky for them to camouflage themselves and their craft in space

And also they have what scientists belive to be an "inertia canceller" because of the many siteings that have been reported. they have benn reported to go up 9000mph. Then suddenly stoping or doing right angles and such. If we did that we would be squashed by the sudden stop. THis  " inertia canceller" could apply the force of gravity against the forve of inertia
