I was doing some welding today and to avoid arc eye i wore goggles which have clear glass lenses plus very dark and almost impossible to see through flip down lenses which cuts down the amount of UV light from the welding reaching your eye and causing damage.
But as Normal glass stops UV from passing through why cant i just wear clear glass lenses to protect my eyes rather than the dark lenses

It's not just the UV that you need to protect your eyes from, it's the intensity of the light too - without the dark glass you'd not be able to see what you were doing as it would be too bright.
