Title: Is Kaaba located in the centre of the Earth?
Post by: pharmacist2030 on 19/04/2016 06:28:01
I wonder if Kaaba is really located in the center of the Earth, Muslims claim that Kaaba is located in the center of the Earth. I have been told that Aeroplanes and birds can't fly over the Kaaba because of the the massive gravitational force in this area. They also claim that the first point where the sunrise is Mecca. I hope that someone who has answers to these questions can help me.I need scientific facts based on studies in this area because I feel that it is a hoax and it doesn't make sense to me but I want some clarification and what they mean by the center of the Earth? (Relative to what?!!)

The center of the earth is about 4000 miles down, not in Arabia.  There are no known gravitational effects of the Kaaba other than those associated with its mass. (For example, pilgrims circumambulating it do not stick to it like iron filings to a magnet. Also, I have never heard of spacecraft having to allow for it in calculating their orbits. )  I don't know anything about the relation of the Kaaba to the sunrise, but a number of ancient structures around the world do in fact have some relation to the movements of the heavenly bodies.

Muslims claim that Kaaba is located in the center of the Earth.

There are also people who believe that Elvis is still alive and living in Memphis, and others who claim there's an alien spaceship hiding behind the moon.

I think you get the picture.

No. That's impossible.  The gravitational forces at the center of the earth are so strong that there cannot be any buildings down there. They'd be destroyed since the mass density there basically has a spherical symmetry and decreases with the distance from the center to the surface being solid at the center and extremely hot, e.g. 9,800 °F. None of the Muslims I know believe this.
The Kabba is in Mecca which Muslims consider to be the religious centre of the world (not the earth) in the same way the Romans considered Rome to be the centre of the world.
As to the other stuff, I'd take it with a pinch of salt. Remember there are Cristians who believe Jesus walked in England!

Obviously true. Look at any map. Where is the centre of the universe? Longitude 0, of course, which is by consensus halfway between London and Cambridge.

Where is the centre of the universe? Longitude 0
And latitude 0??

I have however, heard folks from Oxford make a similar claim.
For me it's wherever I am.

I have seen maps of the Earth where the Kaaba in Mecca is at the center of a circular projection of the Earth.

It was touted as an aid to help Muslims face the Kaaba for their daily prayers.

It is possible to ask where the geographic center of the earth is, that is, the "center of all land as seen on a map".  The problem that immediately rises is that the result depends on what map projection you are using, and exactly what you mean by "center".  Therefore, the answer will always be rather ambiguous. However, a reasonable definition could be that the geographic center of the earth is that point on its surface that corresponds to the bottommost point of a terrestrial globe in the following experiment:
Consider a terrestrial globe, hollow, unmounted from a spindle, uniform in surface density (mass per square inch), and, of course, printed with maps of the land and water surfaces of the Earth.  If you set it in a pan of water, it will float in any position.  Now consider overlaying, upon this same globe, an additional thin layer of some material, over all the land portions but none of the water portions.  Now refloat the globe, and the unbalanced weight will cause it to assume a specific position.  When it assumes this position, the point that is lowest corresponds to the geographic center of the earth.  This definition is meritorious in that it corresponds to the epicenter of the "center of mass" of all the Earth's land surface, and also is on the exact opposite side of the globe of a similarly definable hydrographic center of the Earth.   Now , as to how close this geographic center of the Earth is to the Kaaba:  I don't know, but it seems that this geographic center must lie somewhere in the general vicinity of the Middle East, even though I do not know its exact latitude and longitude.

an additional thin layer of some material
An important clarification: Is this material meant to be more or less dense than water? ie cork or steel? (I assume steel?)

Thanks a lot for your replies. I knew that it doesn't make sense because as I stated in my question what centre exactly means, it should be relative to something. Regarding my other question if it is the first point where the sun rises, this is unmeasurable, you can't exactly know where is the point where the sun rises, the earth just spins, there is no point where the sun first rises.

More dense.

You  are quite correct in observing that strictly speaking, we need to take into account the additional displacement of water due to the overlay material. The problem can be minimized by using a very dense material. However, it could also be eliminated entirely by placing the overlay on the inside surface of the globe (here assumed thin), so that its effect on the displacement of water would be independent of its angular position, because it would never touch the water. If it is done that way, then materials less dense than water are also allowable.

Hello all ladies and gentlemen

thank you for discussing this information

[MOD EDIT - NO DODGY RELIGIOUS REFERENCES, THANKS; THE QURAN IS NOT A SCIENTIFIC TEXT; PLEASE KEEP YOUR RELIGIOUS CONVICTIONS TO YOURSELF]

that was the truth and the correct information I have and if you have any questions you have the search for answers yourself as I'm not a scientist I'm Just a normal person fond of science and technoloies

best regards

Is not the gravity zero at the centre of the Earth? as all the gravity generating matter is an equal distance away in every direction

all stones sink in water
Pumice stone floats on water, and often washes up on beaches after storms.

Or if that doesn't work, try www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1FOhfQBYMs

the black stone never get hot even if we put in the fire
I wonder if this experiment has been tried in the past century, with thermocouples and infra-red thermometers?

the black stone structure is not found in all of our galaxy so it came from out of our Galaxy
Since we have not even taken a reasonable sample of rocks in our solar system, let alone our arm of the galaxy, this would seem to be a wild extrapolation.

you can't see any of the polar stars in all the sky from this location
That makes sense.
The Kaaba is located at 22 degrees North. It would be very difficult to see the Pole star from this location, as it would be close to the horizon. Any surrounding buildings or lights would make it harder.
There is no star visible to the naked eye at the south pole. It would be hard to see the southern cross as it is also close to the horizon.

I add to kabba and the black stone  Zamzam well,  located close to kaaba .Muslims claims that Zamzam well water is holy and  heals diseases , according to Sunnah scriptures , the second Muslims' holy source.

If the Zamzam well-water is holy and cures diseases,  when will the benefits of this water be made available to everyone?

it came from out of our Galaxy
This year we saw a scientific first: The first object confirmed to have come from outside our Solar System.

Unfortunately, astronomers only spotted it as it was moving away from us, so they didn't get a very good look at it.

We can tell from its hyperbolic trajectory that it exceeds the escape velocity of the Sun, so it is from outside our solar system. We can also tell from its velocity that it does not exceed the escape velocity of our galaxy, so it's origin is probably from within our galaxy.

Just an aside that has no more scientific connection than has much of this thread.

There is a tradition in the Penzance area in Cornwall that Joseph of Arimathea visited several times, and that it is he after whom Market Jew St in Penzance was named.  The story maintains that on one occasion he brought Jesus with him.  Even as a child, I took this story with more than a pinch of salt.  I suspect that the origin of Market Jew St is more accurately traced to Jewish trading in/about the 17th c.
