Title: What would you not want to lose?
Post by: Make it Lady on 11/01/2009 19:27:28
If you were told you were losing your sight, hearing or ability to speak which would you miss the most. As communication is a big part of my life I would hate to not be able to speak and hear. I'm not as worried about hearing.

I lost my hearing for several months when I was a young child, and then later as a teenager I nearly lost my sight to an eye disease.   I can't imagine not being able to speak, but I could probably live with that or  the loss of hearing more than I could the loss of sight.  For me, the thought of not being able to see if terrifying.

Being deaf would affect your ability to speak as you could not hear the vocal sounds you were making.

There is always sign language ...  http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JMA9bpLXC8A  [:)]

I am in agreement with you on this... sign language and such can help compensate for verbal and hearing disabilities although it is still very difficult!
but loss of sight for me would be devastating... and even more difficult to deal with!

My dignity. I hate the thought of 1 day maybe not being able to use the lavatory by myself or having to have bed baths. I think if I ever get to that stage I would want out.

I am with you on that, mate. I watched my dad go through this and it was heart wrenching.

I'm a photographer, but I would rather loose my eyes than my ears.
No music or casual conversation, no thank you, I'd rather pass.

I must say.. that I have spent the majority of this last year needing help in the bathroom as well  howering.. I hd to make adjustments in my head as wel as physcally in ordr to get back to where I am today.... able to do both on my own again....
I still struggle with certain things.. washing my back etc...But I am happy to say I am glad to still be here to get the chance to make these adjustments.. and I struggle every day to tell myself that I am worth struggling to keep.. worth living despite my inabilities to do things....Sometimes part of life is accepting help  from others when one can no longer do for ones self...It has been and still is, a constant struggle with my own thoughts to keep going cause there must be some good reason that I am still here and able to breathe in everyday and have hope that tomorrow may bring glorious and wonderful happiness and good things my way! I do not know why I was given the physical problems I have.. but smehow I think it was a test for me...
I may have stumbled given up and fallen flat on my face.... Had myself a real bad pity party....but I have gotten up.. thanks to my friends here and I am more determined then ever to get better...
Thats not to say I won't fall down again.. but..I will continue to get up until I can't do it anymore.
Dignity is really hard to hang on to sometimes...but dignity can also be holding your head up and accepting help....being less prideful is very hard....acceptin the help for me has been even more difficult then the loss of my self abilities!

My introverted nature (concerning person-to-person conversations) makes this a no-brainer.  I would rather lose my speech.

honestly... not much of my routine would change.  I would just have to carry a pen and paper around with me, or learn sign language.

Of course, that could just be me saying that, and I couldn't really predict how I would react to any of these.

My am dram group goes down the pub after the rehearsals and it is the best part of the week bantering and larking about. I also love to eves drop. My friend Jean has lost most of her hearing and although she comes down to the pub she sits there totally lost and unable to keep up with the repartee. when I had a growth on a gland in my neck I thought "This is it, I've got throat cancer and I'll never be able to speak again. It was just after Nigella Lawsons husband had just died from mouth cancer. He was a journalist/presenter. He hated the loss of his speech.

I had a cousin who was blind deaf and dumb, and right from an early age, becuse he was only a few years younger than my father, i have always wondered about that question.  They are all such important senses, but if i were to lose one, it would be sight, I guess if you have never seen, you wont miss it, if you have had sight and lost it, you have the images in your head, but not to be able to hear or talk, that would be tough.Over speaking and hearing, I would rather be abe to hear and listen than speak.

Karen - I hear what you say and I admire you for what you have acheived; but I was referring to a permanent situation where there is no hope of recovery. My great aunt suffered from Alzheimer's and I saw a once-proud woman (she got the Queen's award for nursing when she was a matron) deteriorate to the point where she didn't even realise she had messed herself. That's more the sort of thing I meant.

It's ok  Eth.. I understood what you meant... and havebeenin that situation with my own mother....
and totally understandwhat you say and have also been of the same mindset.....I did not mean my post to be of...disagreement to anything yousaid but rather that I understand where one comes from feeling that loss of dignity.. even in just the loss I have had... so given the scenerio of permanace I would also find it very ear mpossible to continue.....Just because of the difficulty thus far....experienced!

I hate the thought of ... having to have bed baths.

If I were too far gone I wouldn't notice anyway. I don't rate Angelina Jolie that highly anyway. Now, had you said Lexa Doig... (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Flicking%2F3.gif&hash=ebaedaf1f8058324ec4fd986120489b5)

That phrase could have accidentally activated an Al Qaeda sleeper cell   [:)]
