The other day. Anastasia told me that the ladybird she had just caught, was five years old. How did she know this i asked, well it has five spots, was her confident reply.
Was she right? Do their spots indicated age, if not what do they indicate?

Hi Paul!
The number of spots depend on what type of lady-bug it is.
There are some species that have some variability in the coloration- so even within the same species you can have different number of spots.
Other species are very consistent- always seven or fourteen spots.

Most ladybugs only live a few months to two years at most. [:(]

The rumor probably started in the same place as the story that the number of times you had to blow to get all the seeds off a dandelion "clock" actually told you the time! [;D]

We always said if you could blow all of the seeds off a dandelion in one breath your boyfriend was in love with you. If you couldn't the number that remained were how many reservations they had.
I wonder if there's a book of all these type of sayings somewhere.

Do spots indicate age of the Ladybug? No there are over 5,000 species 450 alone in the USA, Asian Ladybugs were imported by the Gov. back in the early 60's to combat a large population of aphids in the farm belt, I believe the problem was wrongly ID of the Aphids the advisor said, they were Asian Aphids so recommended importing Asian Ladybugs. Which they did by the thousand's
You can see video's of the problems they have caused. They took care of the over population problem but have created new ones, unlike the local species which do not bite these bite humans, and the bigest problem they do not migrate like local species to the mountains they like to live in peoples homes.
