Once it has started bleeding, what ways can you stop it? I usually just get two fingers and apply pressure at the top of the nose, just a bit below the eyes and try not to tip my head. Anyone else know other methods?
How about things that you can eat/drink to stop them starting in the first place! [:P]
-
Has no-one ever had to deal with bleeding noses? Am I the only one? [::)][???]
-
I stick a rolled up piece of tissue up my hooter for a few mins. Looks a bit like Mr Bean, but it works for me.
-
I do that too Don_1. When there isn't a sink around! [:(!] [:(!]
-
Do you often get them? Perhaps there is something else that you should research, rather than only how to stop them....
-
I see that we have ads for Haemorrhoids now! Bleeding arseholes!
-
Often, not really. It just seems to be in summer when it is really hot and when I get a bit dehydrated. I had one the other day and it is the first one since last summer, so I was a bit worried that they'll keep coming back but so far its just been the once. [:)] It usually happens around sleeping time, usually when I get up, or before I go to bed and a few years back, even in the middle of the night when I was going to the bathroom, that was a bit annoying to say the least [:(!] [:(!] [:(!]. But I am keeping my fluids high and eating carefully, I was just wondering if anyone had any complementary medicine thay had cooked up themselves! [:)] [:)] [:)]

It sounds as though it might be linked to blood pressure, for example, when you wake up, your blood pressure is increasing. Also, when under strain, your blood pressure increases locally, and in the head, hence the red-cheeks (on your head!). Perhaps some of the blood vessels in your nose are slightly thinner than usual, and rupture when your BP increases? However - this is merely speculation from a non GP! It may be worth getting it checked. Have you ever broken your nose?
Why would you want to seek complementary medicine?
-
Not complementary medicine as such, but the traditional Chinese medicine that I took a few years ago worked wonders. Don't know if anyone else has had the problem though...

Unfortunately, "traditional Chinese medicine" falls into the "Argument from tradition" logical fallacy. This does not mean that it doesn't work, but caution should be the watchword.
If you have it checked by a trained GP, or better yet, an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) specialist, you may not need any medicine at all...
-
Thank you for your ongoing support dentstudent, I'll keep that in mind [:)]
-
Dentstudent is correct. This sounds like a blood pressure problem. You really MUST go to the GP. It might just be a thin skin problem that means as soon as your blood pressure rises the veins in your nose near the skin surface break through the skin. This is something that should be sorted.
-
Thank you Make it Lady, I'll get it sorted out [:)][:)]
-
Dentstudent is correct.
Phew! And blimey! Thanks MIL.

Sorry I did not see this sooner.. The way we were taught to do this for our health and safety training from blue cross is to sit down pinch the nose closed put your elbows on your knees and lean your head down forward with nose closed. This is supposed to allow the blood to form a clot and stop the bleeding!
-
Hmmm...haven't heard of that one before, might come in handy (hopefully not though). Thank you.
-
Yeah.. I thought it was weird to but by Joe it does the trick....I do a training every year for adults and children and that has been the newest one the books for the last couple years!
-
I've always just tipped my head back, which seems to stop it.
Heard that taking low-dose aspirin on a regular basis can cause nose bleeds.
-
My mother has told me to get some cold water and slap my forehead, and it works!
-
LOL..HMMM I wonder what happens when you get some cold water and slap your behind? ... [;D]
-
I sorry?
-
LOL.. It was a joke.. as in Perhaps it may clot the other end up...Put a plug in it ..Plug you up in other directions.. Me is a bad jokester.. sorry.. my humor is still very young! LOL..
-
Perhaps it was not as funny as I thought it was!

That's because aspirin is a Blood thinner!

I've just remembered something else, you roll up a piece of tissue paper or whatever and stuff it between your teeth and top lip, (the end result is that you look like a rugby player or a boxer with their mouthguards in) then you press hard on it and the bleeding should stop [:)]
-
forms a clot in the nostrils where the blood piles up.
-
What does?
-
holding the tissue there and holding it!
-
Are you referring to this?

-
yes, indeedy!
-
With all due respect Karen W., but I don't think that you have read the 'instructions' properly.
-
pressing hard on it may have the same effect as if you were pinching the nose off but your lip would be blocking the passage...
-
Only instructions I take agree the red cross advice as in my other posts! LOL
Did you mean yours as instruction?
-
Never mind Karen W. [:)]
I think I am getting a bit tired for this...
-
did I say something to offend you?
-
sounds like you need some sleep!
-
No. Don't worry about it.
I was merely suggesting that I needed some sleep. [:)]
-
sounds like you need some sleep!
There you go! You got there ahead of me! [:)]
-
Oh good for a moment there I thought I said something weird or something! LOL... Best get you some shut eye if you can!!
-
Well, I'm trying my best!
-
Well, I'm trying my best!
Yes I know!!! Me too...Good Luck!

I ran into a rather serious nosebleed one time while mountaineering. My friend decided to make a rather impressive display as in a Monty Python film. Direct pressure only made the blood flow backwards into the mouth. Eventually we were able to pack snow over his face to stop the bleeding. This made my friend happy since an emergency technician who came upon us was ready to ram a long gauze bandage up the nostril to stop the flow.
-
Well, that's is certainly one way!
-
Well I'm not climbing any mountain to stop a nose bleed, come to think of it, climbing a mountain would give me a nose bleed!
-
A freezer.
-
don't joke.
-
It was not a joke.
-

make sure that you don't leen towards ground much, place your head on the top see sky or upwards for 10minutes...
No, that doesn't work (maybe only for a few seconds), trust me. I'll just about drown in my own blood.
-
that works its in Indian system of medicine called Ayurveda it works try that.......
-
Ayurveda tells me to:
If one is able to get fresh unripe Aamalki, crush it in the grater, fry in ghee (clarified butter) for few minutes (should not turn brown) and apply like an ointment on face and nose. In case fresh Aamalki is not available, one can use its dry powder.
Another important anti-hemorrage herb is Ardusi. According to Acharya Charaka, it separates the pitta portion of the blood. The receipe is as follows. Take equal mixture of Harde and Ardusi powders. Add black raisins by equal weight. Raisins should be either seedless or seeds should be removed before mixing. Crushing in the mixture or pounding in `kharal' under pressure will mix all the ingredients to uniform thick Leha. Make pea sized tablets. Swallow two tablets thrice a day with water. According to Acharya Charaka this is very effective remedy for separating pitta from blood and laxative effect of Harde eliminates this pitta through bowels.

I don't care what anyone says, that sounds like evidence-based medicine to me!
I like pitta - normally with sausages and stuff.
-

Yep, well sometimes I do wonder. [::)]
-
it's an old ayurvedic treatment
-
Have you tried it then?

I used to be an operational paramedic in the defense force and we were taught a few options for stopping bleeding noses. If you have any ice around you can put it on the back of your neck which in theory causes the arteries to constrict and should start to stem the blood flow and the same applies to the forehead. The direct pressure helps but due to the fact that blood clots are formed better with contact to air and when it does not have huge pressure behind it keeping it flowing, a common easy fix for the run of the mill blood nose is to grab a tissue, and actually blw the nostril clear as you breath out and the close the other nostril and breath in through the bleeding one which forces a lot of air through the nostril and assists the blood to form a scab. This sounds gross but has worked very quickly and successfully on many occassions.
