Title: Is this mysterious object a planet orbiting a star?
Post by: dream888 on 03/12/2010 10:34:18
this is a piece of star's picture that was taken with using Optical Vortex Coronagraph by university arizona in 2006

If you compare this objects with planets around star beside their unusual form you can see they are very bright as if they have their own light source aside of star. and also both of them have a unusual loop. that's why i call them mysterious objects.
some say this is "dust bunnies" if we had more picture from this star we could confirm or reject "dust bunnies "but if this objects really exist only explain i have is that'' we are not only smart life in universe"

the original picture is dark .i increase brightness and resolution original picture ,now you can see very exciting details.

interesting

Has the planet orbiting this star been verified by other methods such the wobble measurement in the stars motion?

The planet is obviously large - jupiter like

I know how hard it is to receive those little photons when taking a picture of a star many lightyears away, so I would not be surprised of ''trickeries of the light'' like this. I mean, we have them all the time when dealing with normal cameras which can take in a great deal more information.

Well its easy to confirm. Its obviously a star that is near our solar system.

It must produce wobble in the stars motion which is detectable

Yes, of course, how did that escape me????

Seriously dude, the explanations are always a little more complicated than the most uneducated viewpoints. That seems like a speculation at best.

There is another new technique I recall vaguley which can distinguish between a stars lights and reflected light from an object circulating that star - not sure whether thats been verified yet though.

But certianly, star wobble measurements have produced hundreds of jupiter size orbiting planets around nearby stars.

The telescopes are getting more sophisticated and actually being positioned in space - exciting times ahead

Are you trying to tell me that the sun is active for this phenom or is it all guesswork?

you mean with the new technique that analyses light from distant stars?

From what I have read, the technique can infer the elemental composition of an planet orbiting a particualr star by analysing the light reflection/filtering.

(I recall it was a female Greek astronomer who developed the technique with her French co-worker)

Any excitement about these images is very much a case of Children and fools should not get excited about things that they do not fully understand.

Any process of trying to image planets in the vicinity of stars will be pushing the limits of technology and subject to instrumental artefacts and resolution limits.  So unless you are fully aware of these you cannot be sure of what you are looking at.

The images in the references clearly show instrumental noise, wavelength resolution limits and diffraction patterns, there are probably also more subtle effects so without a full explanation of the images and predicted resolution limits and expected artefacts in the images (which is clearly absent from the description) getting over excited by what one is seeing is totally unjustified.  Any sort of image of an extra solar planet is of course a very great achievement even if it is of poor quality.
