Title: Can the reaction between two metals power perpetual motion?

daniel buchanan  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi guys.

If you can create a mini battery using two metals and an electrolyte, could this not be used as an energy source for a perpetual motion machine, or maybe on larger scales?

Dan, from London

What do you think?

PM cannot have an external power source.

The motion would not be perpetual because the chemical reaction between the metals would eventually go to completion, the battery would run down.
