This is perfectly true.My Grandfather was a professional painter & decorator by trade, he often worked in Buckingham Palace. By night, he was a pianist and pub entertainer in Bermondsey, SE London. By all accounts, he would roll home drunk as a skunk most nights, but never spent a penny on booze. All the pub landlords in the area were so pleased to see him come to their pub (because of the audience he attracted) that they would never charge him for his first drink and as the night progressed, the piano would be lined with drinks bought by his audience. When Max Bygraves (also a Bermondsey man) hit the 'big time', my grandfather's audience all agreed that it was he who should have been in Max's position. All of Max Bygraves material and mannerisms were a mirror image of Grandpa's.When he & Grandma moved to the Orpington, Kent area, he continued to play the piano & the fool, in local pubs until his late 70's and still drew in a good audience.I fear corny jokes may run in the family.
