Title: How does electrolysis work?

Dear Chris,

After listening to your podcast I got really deep into the LHC. I started wondering about it as a power source. I read about how the beams are configured in hydrogen tanks. So while I'm still working on the LHC, I have a new subject I couldn't find help for on any of the podcasts. I want to build an electrolysis device and use the hydrogen to power a piston or something of that sort.

So..................
1. Is there a way to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen and funnel it through a tube to an igniter?
2. Does the hydrogen come off the positively of negatively charged metal? (I'm pretty sure it's the positive, so I'm just checking)
3. Is it feasible that the hydrogen protons shot at each other in the large hadron collider could create and surge of possibly harnessed energy?
 
Sorry to use you as a source of my knowledge frequently. Thanks for all your help!
