Statics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statics) question : what fraction of the weight of the cross is he actually carrying ?
-
He is still carrying a lot of the cross.
He is carrying approximately 100% of the weight of the cross piece.
Then the question is how much of the upright, and it probably comes out to close to 2/3 of the weight of the upright. Overall, he may be supporting as much as 3/4 the weight of the cross.
However, the wheel plays a vital role in reducing friction of the portion that is being dragged which would be significant. In fact, it may be easier to carry the whole cross rather than dragging it without a wheel.

I was going for about 3/4 too. I think the addition of a wheel is ingenious and/or sacrilegious.
Should go the whole hog and put "go-faster" stripes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racing_stripe) on it, and compulsory dangling furry-dice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_dice)*

Whether or not one believes in doing penance,
Does one get the full effect of the penance when one takes shortcuts?
There are also people who voluntarily are hung on crosses, but apparently they are tied to the crosses rather than being nailed, and may have foot rests. Or, maybe they just hold onto hand holds & foot holds.
Nails through the hands and feet could cause permanent damage, of course.

Maybe add some pedals and a long chain to the wheeled-cross ....

In the Philippines, they DO have people actually nailed to crosses, tho I believe they are tied, as well, to take the pressure off the hands and feet, while nailed on the cross, I think, for the day. There is also a lot of flagellation...
I believe that the Australian comedian John Saffron did a series on religion and went there and had himself nailed to a cross, as he tried out all sorts of beliefs.

Not promoting it - I'm atheist, just contributing.

Perhaps one should build a balsa cross.
And, then cover it with veneer, if deemed necessary to obfuscate the choice of materials.
