Would you, could you in a cardboard box? No this is not the rude version of Dr Seuss.
As so many threads have been about Death recently I thought I'd ask how people would like to be disposed of once they popped their cloggs or bought the farm.
I was going to visit the Sustainability centre in Petersfield, Hampshire. My boss, not known for her navigation skills was directing me. She suddenly told me to turn down a narrow road that went through a wood. It was a little bit spooky. " Are you sure this is the right way," I asked, "You are not going to murder me and hide my body here are you?"
She agreed that it had that murder mystry feel about it. Eventually the road widened and we were blessed with the most beautiful views. When we reached our destination we both were surprised to see a sign on the door of the centre saying "Natural burials this way!"
We both decided that we would and could be buried in this particularly beautiful wood. What about you folk, burial at sea, ashes to the four winds? tell us your final resting places.

Ideally I would like to be laid in a pine box and allowed to rot back into the ground on the family farm. Since I don't think that is allowed here, and I have absolutely no wish to be preserved and sealed in a crypt as is the norm in the US, cremation. My sister has said I can have a spot on her mantle, I can think of worse places to spend the great beyond.
If I had lived the life for it, set adrift on a floating pyre would be acceptable.

Hopefully any useful bits will have been "harvested" before these ceremonies will take place : i.e. organ donation.
If your body is not fit for organ donation you could donate it for medical research,
although you could end up in the passenger seat of a medical student's car to enable him to drive in the "car-pool" lane. [:)]
If you're going to cremate the leftovers, consider having this music played as the coffin goes through the curtains...

I could be satisfied with my articulated skeleton standing in the corner of a medical lecture hall, especially if I was kept in a heroic pose.
It would be nice if someone polished my metal parts every now and again too (rare earth magnets will stick to my neck now).

I have had all my family cremated.
I am now facing a rather long spell 'at Her Majesties pleasure'.

Since there is nothing after death except decomposition and the recycling of the component chemicals which go to making up our bodies, it would make sense to dispose of them in an eco-friendly manner. Bodies could be sent to a human tissue composting center, and when the composting process has comleted, the compost could be used as any other compost would be used. You could have dear old Auntie Mable spread under a new tree or bush, or even on your vegetable plot.
Of course the composting facility would have to be situated a good distance from any habitation since it might be a tad on the pongy side.
It may seem extremely harsh and cold to many I know, so I appologise to you who may be upset by my post. I do understand and appreciate your religious belief's might find my notion distasteful or even down-right evil.

which is French territory, to keep their dead mother's body refrigerated at home.
The pair had wanted to keep her in a glass-topped freezer in the cellar.

[Jeremy Bentham] As requested in his will, his body was preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet, termed his "Auto-icon". Originally kept by his disciple Dr. Southwood Smith, it was acquired by University College London in 1850. The Auto-icon is kept on public display at the end of the South Cloisters in the main building of the College. For the 100th and 150th anniversaries of the college, the Auto-icon was brought to the meeting of the College Council, where he was listed as "present but not voting". Tradition holds that if the council's vote on any motion is tied, the auto-icon always breaks the tie by voting in favour of the motion.
The Auto-icon has always had a wax head, as Bentham's head was badly damaged in the preservation process. The real head was displayed in the same case for many years, but became the target of repeated student pranks including being stolen on more than one occasion. It is now locked away securely.
