How close does matter has to be together so it can be consider a single mass object?

The actual distance between the two objects is not critical it is just important that you are observing the gravitational effect from a distance considerably greater than the separation of the two objects. from a distance ten times further than the separation distance of two equal mass objects the difference in the field is very small.

thanks, everything comes to play in the reference from which we catalog objects.
