Don't smoke. It ruins your health. End of story.

I quit smoking twenty years ago and am here to testify about how much healthier I feel as a result. Before I got serious about giving up the habit, I was smoking about 3 packs a day. From this I graduated to smoking cigars, which BTW if you really enjoy the smoke, is the only way to go. As of this writting, I've been smoke free for over twenty years and can testify to the improvement in my general health. I'll not return to the bondage I once had to endure and I would recommend to every young person this piece of advice:
You'll be much better off if you never start, that's a promise!

I have given up the weed many times, but always end up back on it, usually smoking more per day than I did before. So I have given up trying to give up.
My advice to those smokers who have managed to kick the habit:
Forget the idea that 'just one won't hurt', it can and it does. DON'T DO IT!
Don't take the 'holier than thou' attitude with smokers; there is no-one worse than an ex smoker.
My advise to those who do not smoke:
DON'T TRY IT. Its just not worth the risk.
My advise to governments:
If you genuinely want to stop people smoking (which I seriously doubt), embark on a long term strategy. An annual increase in the age at which tobacco can be bought will gradually reduce the number of smokers to zero. Introduce heavy fines for those who supply the under age.
But the problem is that governments do not want to stop smoking because there is so much revenue to be gained from smokers. In the UK the treasury spends £5 billion a year on smoking related problems, but it gathers £8 billion in taxes. Net profit £3 billion! Who wants to be the chancellor who raises taxes to cover for this loss of revenue?
