Title: Can someone just become biploar?
Post by: Simulated on 17/05/2008 01:41:57
Well, are they always bipolar or does it come later in life? Later in life say about 14 and a half with no sign of it coming at all?

Good question. I have a friend who has been told he might be bipolar. Whenever i'm with him he seems normal enough, but sometimes he gets really angry and does things like try to drive his girlfriend into a fence with his car, i'd like to learn more about it

See this is what I don't understand. She never showed it at all, but she's been hanging out with this friend of her's more and more and her friend is purdy much messed up. And now she's acting more and more messed up. She says she's bipolar, I don't think she is, cuz whenever we see eachother she's just fine and she's just about as perfect as perfect can be. I realy don't get it.

She diagnosed herself? If so, she needs to see a doctor. Bipolar is a serious disorder, but it's treatable.
And yes, onset can be very sudden. At that age a lot of changes happen within the body and brain and it might get triggered, if the disposition is already there.
Depending on the exact type of the disorder, people can be quite normal at times and very extreme at other times.
Wikipedia has a good article about it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_disorder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_disorder)

I had to learn the hard way about this disorder, because a good friend has it and I was really confused about her behaviour. Now she's taking her pills and she's a lot better.

Monika <- not a doctor, but your friend should see one, if she hasn't already

Unless her dad is a doctor, he can't diagnose her just like that. But he's right, the disorder runs in families. So it's even more important for her to have that checked out.
You can't make her go to see a doctor, her parents can, which they hopefully do. Do you have a school nurse or counsellor or someone like that? Go talk to him/her and voice your concerns. You're not tattling, you're being a good friend. This is something you need the help of an adult for.

He ain't.
And her parents don't care about her so she says, but think they are good? and she never told them about the concussion. but like yeah its all confusing.

A lot of american kids are diagnosing themselves as bipolar when they are not. As soon as they have social issues, concentration problems and a few mood swings....Oh im bipolar. But did you go and see a doc....ummm no.....I just know I am. A lot of them do go and see docs and guess what....the dodgy american doctor tells them just what they want to hear. They get put on some medications which they quickly find are hard to take....so they stop them soon....but having the drugs in the cupboard helps....keeps them satisfied....ooooo....im bipolar. The kid wins cause she now has an excuse as to why she is failing at school. The gulible american parent buys it all like chicken soup. The american doctor wants a teen patient on his books anyway....why not ?....helps diversify his portfolio....the income is not bad either. The drug companies dont mind if all american teens are bipolar....bipolar is now fashionable....the kids nod their heads.
All the while there are true manic depressives in great suffering of whom we dont hear much. Why did american doctors change the name of the condition from manic depression to bipolar....to fool a whole new generation of american teens onto drugs.
