Title: Source of CO2
Post by: RNA on 22/03/2004 02:07:34
I plan to set experiment  that require CO2 gas.
How can I get CO2 gas in low cost methos.
I try to get from the dissolution of  Na2CO3 but NaCL may disturb the reaction.
Please provide me the method to get quantitative small amount of CO2 gass in cheep.

Thank you very much.

how much do you need?

Oops, didn't mean to hit submit there [:I]
I use it on a daily basis, but I just have a gas spicit that comes out of the wall, if this is just a one time deal for you, then thats probably not practical, unless you can find a lab that has it.
Have you considered using the small compressed cartridges that they sell for powering air rifles, and inflating bike tires/balls etc.???
(just trying to thing of practical ways before making my brain spin with chem equations that will get it for you)

[:(!]rrrrr.... every time I hit submit another thought pops into my head. <--Reffer to my signature!!
where are your from RNA (and don't say my cytoplasm) and can you be more specific about what you need this for?

(OK last one I promise)

I need CO2 to react with NaOH in close vessel.
I will determine the  remaining NaOH.
Therefore, it exact amount should be quantitatively measure.

Thank you,

eek, you made me think, what did I ever do to you?  All I can come up with right now is:

2HCl + CaCO3 --> CO2 + CaCl2 + H2O

But if you can't keep the products of this rxn seperate from your other rxn then I REALLY think you might have a problem with the HCl affecting your NaOH (just a hunch of mine).  I'll let you know if anything else comes to mind, (or if i get bored enough to look it up).  But on the otherhand if you saw my GPA for chem classes throughout my life I don't think you'd listen to a word I said in this category of the forum

Sorry my brain works in spurts on a sunday...

CH4 + 2O2 -->  2H2O + CO2

I'll just keep throwing them out as they come to me.  You can figure out whether they are suitable to your needs.  Can you understand my notation of the rxns even though there is no subscript option on here??

2FeO3 + 3C --> 4Fe + 3CO2   (OK, that on I looked up, I'm not a chemistry brain child)

oooo.... this is the one that the guy who discovered CO2 (Joseph Black) used:

CaCO3(s) (heated) ---> CaO(s) + CO2(g)

This site has a pretty straight forward method for preparing CO2, but then again, it looks like you might run into acid issues: http://mattson.creighton.edu/CO2/

Thank you so much.
I think raction of NaHCO3 and CH3COOH would fit.
Since acetic acid will not produce much acid vapor to disturb NaOH in seperated container.
( both raction vial and base vial are in same close system but sperate container.)
However, the system withour acid may be the best, but with heat  is not suitable.

Thanks.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!

I know a VERY easy way to get it if you don't mind it being mixed with a tiny bit of other stuff like nitrogen and water vapour and things :)

C6H12O2 + O2 --->  C2O + H2O + energy

I think that's right, but I may be wrong

Shame on you Quantum, the equation doesn't balance...[;)]

why don't you balance it for her?

i have been here longer yet you seem to be more advanced...

Okay fine I'll balance it, lol.

C8H12O2 + 4O2 ---> 4C2O + 6H2O + energy

I couldn't figure out how to balance it without changing the C to 8 ... I really can't remember what the equation is ! If someone knows it please tell me !

C6H12O6 + 6H2O+6O2 = 6CO2+12H2O +Energy  is the balanced reaction, but I don't think this rxn would be well suited for this use as respiration is a very complex process and exact amounts would be very dificult to measure.

This is a signature.... AND YOU WILL LIKE IT!!

Okay mr. Fly thanks. I learned that once in year 8 but we didn't use it for anything, so i forgot it.
