A school near Swindon had to be evacuated and two children were taked to hospital with breathing problems after an experiment to make sulphur dioxide went wrong.
What could possibly go wrong?

Do they still use Kipp's apparatus? They always seemed pretty reliable - perhaps the fume cupboard fan failed; that would cause a scatter. [xx(]

Barely informed speculation alert.
Copper forms two oxides.
There is a common school laboratory experiment where CuO is dissolved in sulphuric acid to give copper sulphate. Black powder + clear liquid gives blue liquid. If you like, you can evaporate off some of the water and get pretty blue cystals.
All nice and safe and pretty.
Repeating the experiment with Cu2O (the other copper oxide) would initially give copper sulphate and a suspension of powdered copper.
No great harm there.
Heating copper with (moderately concentrated) sulphuric acid generates sulphur dioxide which is stinky, poisonous and provokes asthma in some people.
Oops.

But why would an experiment done thousands of times suddenly produce enough gas to clear several science labs? Surely they were using a fume cupboard if an asthma inducing gas is about to be produced. I have to produce a risk assessment just for lighting a candle or launching a water rocket.
