what chemicals are used, and do they break down the "waste product", kill bacteria, or something else.

I'm thinking they just use typical antiseptics. Breaking down the solids would be a bit too demanding for a portable system plus it doesn't make sense. A tear would cause liquids to escape but not necessarily solids.

Are these chemicals meant to be different to what you you would use in an ordinary toilet?

I would suppose that they would have to be less corrosive since most home toilets are made of ceramics and are more resistant whereas we typically use plastics for portable toilets. Also, the piping is usually either PVC or metallic in our homes and go straight into the Cest Pool.
