Title: Can blushing be controlled?
Post by: kelly on 27/05/2004 18:21:41
Is there any way to keep yourself from blushing?  I want to do some public speaking and don't want to have a bright red face.[:I]

...Hi Kelly....join the club !!!!..I go red so easily...even to the point where I look guilty even though I'm not.......

In my experience blushing is one of those bodily fucnctions that I believe are impossible to control once you are actually blushing but, perhaps if you have the right state of mind like if  you can manage not not feel embarassed then I think you can'control' it....

doing a google search with 'blushing' brings up quite a few pages on it....some claiming to cure it with hypnosis and others that deal with it as a serious complaint...here's the link to my set of results http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=blushing

I do wish you luck and hopefully someone here can help you better..........worse case scenaraio I suppose would be to use make-up to camouflage it !!!

Basically, blood causes blushing.  The "flight or fight" syndrome caused by activity in the sympathetic nervous system.  I have a few solutions to your problem...

1)  Alcohol will affect the behavorial inhibitory centers of your brain so you can speak with more confidence.  *Produces much more bad side effects.

2)  Make-up... a thick coat

3)  Stay cool and try to keep your blood pressure down

4)  Exercise first, focusing mainly on cardiovascular, then take a cool period, shower, then do your speech.  The exercise will help with confidence because it provides a sense of self-satisfaction.  Also heart beats per minute is lower after exercise so blood isn't running as fast.

I don't know if any will work, just trying to throw some suggestions based on science for you.

Who is your audience?  Are they laypersons, scientists, teens?  You must present it at their level.  Know your subject and know how you are going to present it.  That way you can speak with confidence.

I think there's a form of cosmetic surgery where they stop some of the blood vessels that go to your cheeks so that you can't blush.  It's very popular with businessmen who get flustered easily.

I cant present what so ever.  I get up in front of my class, turn BRIGHT red, shake, then start to stutter.  Its horrible since i can't think striahgt, so I end up getting marked down for my presentation.  Like Mr. Rokit man said picturing THEM naked really does make it easier to stand up there, even if you cant help turning a little red!!

To see the world through a grain of sand.

how about including some dark picures in your slides (powerpoint presentation?) that require the lights to be turned down, then no-one can see if you're blushing or not.

Ack I hate blushing, and that guilty-when-you're-not thing, I know where you're coming from: I was once in a lecture where the lecturer said that there must be <some number> of people in the room with some form of STD (can't remember which).. some devil inside my brain made me blush and as soon as I started I blushed even more thinking that everyone must think I was one of the suffers [:I]

My method of getting through is to just try to comopletely ignore it when I blush. Just pretend it isn't happening or that it doesn't matter. To be honest it rarely does, especially in a speech situation. Everyone watching will be sympathetic, after all, and the blushing itself isn't going to mess your speech up. Worrying about it is always just going to make it worse and if there's nothing you can do then there's nothing you can do so just ignore it as much as possible.

Here Here !!..I think Valley has hit the spot there.....there's really nothing you can do about it...except worry...and that'll probably exacerbate the situation...and you know what ?...once you've done it a few times you won't even think twice about it.....
