Someone called our radio programme recently and asked me if salamanders use silicon instead of carbon; he claimed to have read a story about this. Is anyone aware of this?

the only connection I've heard between silicon & salamanders is that used to seal the tanks in which they are kept.
PS - salamanders are amphibians.
