Is Fog just a big old cloud that is resting on the ground ?
If it is a cloud then how did it get there ?...did it form at ground level ? or did it form in the sky and plummet downwards ?
Is Fog like a rain clouds ?...if so , how come we don't get wet when inside one ?
Is Mist just diluted Fog ?
I wish I knew...but I don't have the foggiest !!! [;D] *LOL...groan*
do ewe ?
-
Errr... I thought fogs were clouds which we low down.. Maybe I'm wrong?
-
Oh sorry! I didn't read your post correctly.. It is lower down because the contact, where the cold and hot air meet, is at a lower point?

Have you never been up a mountain in the early hours of the morning, as you first see the mist form in the valleys below, and gradually rise as the morning begins to warm?
-
Ermm err.. Does that mean George is following with me, or against me? I see it that George is agreeing.. [:-\]

Nice pics.. I live in a fog belt! humboldt county for years was known for fog.. they used to say when I was a wee girl that it was the second foggiest place in the world.. I want to say london or somewhere in england was on the list above us . The weather has changed drasticly here over 46 years and we have less fog, but it can get really bad to the point of zero visibility coming down on the mountain side some nights can be wickedly dangerous, as you must open your car door and drive 5 miles an hour to see where the center line is on the road! Coming off the mountain you better stay on the road or you could easily find yourself off the edge and into the canyon or the river, and rocks! but you would free fall for about 800 to 1500 ft down before getting there!

Up until the mid 1950's, London could have some horrendous smogs (not quite the same thing as ordinary fog), but since the clean air act, it is not a particularly foggy or smoggy place (in fact, pollution issues aside, urban areas are usually about 2 or 3 degrees centigrade warmer than the surrounding countryside, and this tends to mean they get less fog).
-
I imagine the old pulp mills around here contributed to our smog also but also the fog was real bad. The stacks are closed down these days and the old burners gone . Only one left. so alot less foggy on the coast but coming off the mountain there are some nasty fogs coming down.

I am sure I should be getting a commission from the British tourist board sometime - they have never gotten in touch with me about it - must remind them of all the good work I am doing on their behalf [;D]
-
if i actually went to england i think i'd end up just sitting there listening to people talk and then they'd know i was a tourist for sure and think i'm weird cuz i'd keep asking them to say words over again. lol... sometimes i watch the bbc world news just to hear the news people talk...

LOL...I am a victim of this uniquely American phenomena.
I remember this one time in band camp....erhm...nope !!...I mean...I recall one particular American chap in a store kept asking me to say certain phrases. he also asked me if I knew Prince Charles !!.....

I love boats. Must have come about from spending 32 days aboard one when I was 4 months old.
Don't like the modern cruise liners that are little more than floating hotels - I like boats where you can actually feel you are on the water.
Still much prefer travelling by boat (OK, I like hovercrafts as well) than flying anywhere (although I will make a small exception if I am piloting the aeroplane - unfortunately, I never did finish my PPL training, and it wont happen now).
-
seany! i don't know how i missed this post before but are you saying you lied to me?
-
UH OH , what about???
-
having a boat
-
LOL LOL!!

I am packing as we speak! LOL

Is fog just a cloud?
Yes, fog is defined as a cloud that reduces visibility to less than 1000m. I did write a few definitions of different types of fog HERE. (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=6219.msg130117#msg130117)
