When windows 8 first became available I hated it with is fancy garish GUI and missing functions but with the availability of various third party additions it can be made quite lovable.
It is at least as stable as Win 7 and faster and can be made to look just like win 7 with these additions.
I don't think there are to be as many variations like basic, home, ultimate etc I think you will buy a basic version and pay to upgrade it with various "apps".

Also the IE10 version that comes with it incorporates a spell checker that functions on all text input, I have yet to find any programs it won't function with or peripherals it won't find

On the same machine I bet a lightweight Linux OS, e.g. Puppy Linux (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_linux), will browse faster as it doesn't run anti-malware ...
Puppy doesn't require the anti-malware software that overwhelms older Windows systems.

I am used to resisting efforts to convert me, I stay each year two weeks in Indianapolis deep in the bible belt and have to put up with intensive pressure to make me a Christian.
I know Linux and FireFox have their virtues but I was discussing my experience with Win 8 which can be tamed by the additions I have suggested.
I have Puppy of course on a dongle and in the unlikely event of someone asking me to bring a dead computer to life I am sure it would be very useful but I would not want it as my normal system.
PS some months back I offered a small prize for anyone who could show me how to access my EGG bank accounts with any browser other IE maybe you could win it ?
All bets are off as EGG have been taken over by The Yorkshire building society who have a whole new system.

I just thought I’d put a word in for the free Linux OSes, (which are faster than Windows OSes when run on the same machine), otherwise this thread looks like an advert for Micro$oft.
As you’ve got Linux and Windows OSes then you’ve got the best of both worlds.

I have found Linux puppy useful in removing an unwanted folder from my windows 8 system when the computer kept telling me I was not important enough to do it by any other means (I sometimes wonder who is the boss me or the computer!).
But I have an annoying problem with puppy what ever I do it will not let me access the internet to read mail etc .
I have solved it, this is in fact coming to you via Puppy but I still have one minor bug the number lock does not come on automatic and It does not spell check

There is a program called Frisbee which manages connection to the internet in Puppy better than the native program ... http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Frisbee

Apparently a bunch of game developers are very afraid of win8 thinking its app store is a bad deal for their business. I'm thinking Valve, the maker of that block-game, what's it called...(after a minute of searching) Minecraft and a couple others I think.

I got email working at last in Puppy 5.28 with the use of Thunderbird but first had to set up a Google email account. the only others I have had limited success are Wine and Firefox but I am persevering.
I find the list of distros that you sent me useful but I don't think that I will ever reach even the lowest rank of Linux geekhood.
Later I found Puppy 5.3.3 which was much better with many functions coming in automatically but I still have a strange problem I can install several windows programs with the aid of Wine but I do not know how to start them!.

Do you have Windows Fista not Windows Vista like me?
As for Linux, i'm using Debian "squeeze" , it's a dream but i should have put in Slackware 12 recently but i haven't had opportunity to check it comes with gcc and its cross compilers and extras on the setup disc(i'll take a look on their site and see what its up to), Damn good OS Slackware(well..for developers anyhow).
But of recent and in another recent thread, flash drives, you can now set up a portable flash to hold the Linux OS image installed to direct boot from anywhere on USB, all beats Win whether 8 or Fista full stop.
