During woodwork class at school about hurumph years ago, the teacher (affectionately known as Wally Woodworm) asked me to go the other woodwork classroom and ask the teacher there for a Viscount plane. I fell for it! Off I troted and made myself look a complete twit.

The bastard file (http://www.stanleytools.com/default.asp?CATEGORY=FILES&TYPE=PRODUCT&PARTNUMBER=22-006&SDesc=6%26quot%3B+Mill+Bastard+File) was always popular in the metalwork class.

It's a pun, you see, or a "play on words". "Plane mirror", yes? The answer is in the question.

If you expect to get an answer that makes sense you need to ask the question in a language that's understood by the people you're asking.

Despite the fact that there are only twenty six letters in the English alphabet, there isn't actually a shortage of them as each one can be used an unlimited number of times, and in any order.  Even better still, most of the hard work of choosing which combinations of letters to use, to make words, has already been done for you, so all you have to do is choose the right words from the ones that have already been developed and which are in common use to convey the meaning of what you say.

Although this may just seem to make a message longer, it can also offer benefits by clarifying the meaning of the message, by making small differences in meaning much greater and thus making them easier to see.  I think this may answer your question.

A plane mirror is totally flat, not curved - convex or concave.

The words in your textbook may represent the "right answer" but your teacher probably already knows what was written in your text book and copying that out does not prove that you really understand the question and the answer so what you are expected to do is write out the reasons in your own words very different from those in the text book explaining it as clearly as possible.  This does of course assume that you understand both the question and the answer!

I have never come across this question before and can think of some likely answers but the sort of answer your teacher might expect depends on the level and context of what you are currently being taught and so just giving you an answer may not be a good idea.  Please explain and expand the context of the question and what you were learning and I will attempt to give you a better answer.

I believe that I have already answered the original question, albeit in a very allegorical style, in the final paragraph of my first post in this thread.

Actually, it's not a bad question because it does need a little thought to recognise the obvious.

I think the question was referring to 'eye testing'.
There are two advantages in using a mirror (plane, usually).
Firstly, the operator can change the chart and play with the prescription in the test glasses in the same place (the chart can be placed just behind the person being tested).
Secondly, the room only needs to be half the length of the full distance needed for viewing the test chart because the image depth is the same as the object distance.

A third advantage is that the eye test chart has to be a mirror image so it's less likely that people will  "remember" what it says rather than read it.
