Can any camera be modified to be infra-red?

Zawwar Khan asked the Naked Scientists:
Hi, I had a few questions for Dave Ansell.
I saw a show on Discovery channel, in which you modified a camera to make it infrared. Which handy cam did you use?
Can it be done on any digital/video camera?
What kind of filter did you attach to the front?
Thanks a lot,
Mark
What do you think?

The details of how it was done are here:

Depending on how firmly the IR filter is fixed in it can be a fairly brutal process (cameras generally aren't designed to be "user servicable") so the advice would be not to try it on a camera you want to be sure of still being able to use afterwards..

Yes any digital camera will work in the near infra red if you take the filter out. I had forgotten about that interview, I worry about what it ended up being like...
