I have three apple trees,(same variety etc) two of which have no flowers, whereas one does. Now, I assume I will enjoy apple goodness from the flowered tree but why have the other trees no flowers ?

An apple will be sent to the most helpful reply via fax ! [:D]

Do you really get male and female trees ?

well, I'm convinced !!..but there is another tree (the same variety) in another part of the garden which also has no flowers...and in past years all three have flowered!!

...still...you deserve an apple...*squeezes apple in fax and pushes send*...enjoy !

Neil - don't know much about apple trees, but I had two japanese magnolia trees, one produced beautiful pink flowers and the other didn't.  It had some kind of ugly fungus that eventually killed it.  I have 16 rose bushes, about half are flowering nicely.  The other half aren't flowering and have an infestation of nasty little rose thrips.

My very long winded point is check it for bugs and/or fungus.  Also I just read something about gypsy moth larvae.  They like oak and apple trees.

Yes and no.

I believe you can get male and female cherry trees, but after a little research, I find that apple trees are hermaphrodite (so, clearly not relevant to your query).

THANK YOU Carolyn,

16 rose bushes !!..wow !!..I'm sorry half of them are infected !!..can you treat them ?...they must look stunning when all in bloom.

On close inspection of my non flowering trees, there is no indication of something obvious that is restricting their bloom !...but then, I do not have ' green ' fingers !

George, thanks....but it seems you owe me an apple ! [:)]

I've got apricot trees, they have prolific blooms (and lots of apricots) about every 3 years.  Alternate years they have no to very few blooms.  Some of the trees have different cycles, so I get "cots" almost every year.  Tried to fax you an apricot, now all I have is a bloody mess.
Must be some fruit and nut specialist that can explain all this?

Neil Both of your trees look healthy , but I think you might need to do some pruning, They do not look very old, Just a few years if I were to guess. you need to train them and clear branches that are lower. usually  you should pick 3 or four main trunks and work from there, you want to be able to walk under them. Look up apple prunning , You might be surprised that they need to be prunned when they stop blooming. Mine do that if I skip the pruning for a while. The weather sometimes effects that also, but seeing that one is doing fine, I would say the other may have recieved more polination this year also. Seriously check out how to prune your tree. I always have to get someone in to prune mine, as there is a method to the madness. Fall prunning brings more fruit whereas later pruning produces less fruit but different results, I can't remember for sure, but check it out......Karen

Thank you so much Karen......but when you say I should prune them...does that mean I have to go and do some gardening and stuff ? brrrrrrrrrr !!!...*shivers at the thought of doing some garden stuff*  I did hear that they just don't flower at the same time as per BASS's post above.

I tell you what, I'll get our gardener (wifeys dad !) to check them out !...my attempt at pruning will conclude with the tree being cut down !!..but thank you so much for responding Karen......you're right though thay are fairly young and are very vertical in their structure...ie: they don't grow sideways !!..........hugs to you Mam.

Hey Neil, I just remembered to come back and check on your trees! How are they doing? Lucky man to have a gardener in the family! You are set Sir!

You may be right about the blooming has there been any changes? I too have one apple tree that blooms later then the others, but the fruit is also later. I think that has to do with the varieties of the tree. I had a problem one year where the wind blew all the blooms off before they had a chance to set so when it was time for apples, the one that was protected somewhat from the wind had apples and the other did not. It was a real bummer. I have a three apple trees in the orhard, 1 pear tree and one mixed fruit that is a cross between a nectarine and a plum I believe. Can't remember for sure about the cross, but the fruit is delicious even though the tree is young. They look like nectarines to me. My mom planted it about twenty years ago and my memory fails me as to the exact cross with the nectarine.

My Mother in law has alot of trouble with the deer too! I have too many dogs here so the deer don't bother my trees. They will eat fallen fruit if they can sneak into the yard undetected!

Anyway good luck with your trees!
