Title: What are the consequences of abstaining from sex?
Post by: Felix Awuku on 23/06/2010 09:30:03
Felix Awuku asked the Naked Scientists:

Does too much of sex reduce vision?

If somebody desire not to have sex throughout his/her entire life what would be his/her internal disadvantages and advantages?

What do you think?

I'm assuming this counts as an advantage  [;D]

Based on events that seem to have taken place in the RC church, if you were not one in the first place, there is a grave danger that you will go completely off your rocker and turn into a criminal pedophile.

... his/her internal disadvantages and advantages?

Disadvantage : A woman who has not had children is at a greater risk of breast cancer ...

Advantage: no sex , no sexually transmitted disease.

Well personally, I've never had sex as good as a really good thought.  And the beauty of a mental orgasm is that you can have one on a crowded bus and just sit there grinning inanely without being embarrassed.  They also last a whole lot longer, you can openly discuss them with others, having a mass orgy, any time, any place, any where - and you don't have to shower afterwards, or take your brain out to dinner as a bribe beforehand. to be fair, one can have sex and not have children. So that's really a disadvantage of not giving birth (hooly! there is one!)

There is a school of thought that believes there is a higher incidence of prostate cancer among men who do not ejaculate

http://menshealth.about.com/cs/prostatehealth/a/ejaculate_ptate.htm
"How ejaculation helps reduce prostate cancer
An epidemiological study of 30,000 American men by Michael Leitzman, a cancer researcher at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, has found that men who enjoy an active sex life do not risk prostate cancer in later life.

There has been a suggested link with greater sexual activity and increased incidents of prostate cancer in previous scientific data because of the link with the male hormone testosterone and its effect on promoting cancer cell growth.

Leitzmann's findings were that men who ejaculate between 13 and 20 times a month had a 14% lower risk of prostate cancer that men who ejaculated on average, between 4 and 7 times a month for most of their adult life. Men who ejaculated upwards of 21 times a month had a 33% lower lifetime risk of prostate cancer than the baseline group."

although, once again, that is ejaculation and not necessarily 'sexual intercourse'

I would like to say, however, that, despite these findings, the incidence of prostate cancer among spinal cord injured (who may rarely, if ever, ejaculate post injury) is no higher than among the general population.

To have no sex would definitely be a sure way of not contracting STDs, however, sadly, the libido of a person will not be fulfilled.

More stupid people plus a few smart people = more slaves and a few slave drivers

Unfortunately some of these smart people end up having stupid kids who end up in charge

The consequences of not having sex are intrinsically linked to the reasons one chooses to not have sex. The human animal is biologically wired to enjoy sex. For reasons beyond my understanding, a preponderance of modern societies and religions try to discourage sex. To make it a bad thing. If sexual inhibition is forced upon people through social measures, sex tends to turn towards perversion.

On the other hand, if one chooses to abstain from sex for positive reasons (whatever they might be), it can be a healthy experience.
