Ciaran Marshall asked the Naked Scientists:
Dear Naked Scientists,
I've just moved into a new flat and discovered that we have electric central heating. It's costing us a fortune!
I've seen a few videos online lavishing praise on home-made candle and flower pot heaters. People claim they can heat a small room for 8p a day. I've also seen videos claiming that this is absolute rubbish. Who is right?
I'd really appreciate your help.
What do you think?

You'd need about a dozen candles lit to replace a 1-bar electric-fire ... http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/questions/question/1857/
Without ventilation the candles would pollute the air. Also a fire hazard. Your fire insurance may not cover filling your home with naked flames.

You might do better to invite friends round. I've seen suggestions that the average human produces about 100watts.

Homo sapiens solved the problem of staying warm, centuries ago. My mum said: cotton for comfort, wool for warmth, leather for weather. And share a bed with someone you like.
