Title: Why is Flatulance so prominent during sleeping hours?
Post by: Karen W. on 12/10/2008 14:35:42
Well I have been Lying here in bed awake for the last  3 and 1/2 hours.. listening to my tummy .. rumble with gas.... also I have noticed Rocky My fine bed fellow also is gassy whilst he is sleeping!

Why is it that we have such gas during those sleeping hours....? Is it the horizontal position or pressure against our backs.. intestines or what???

What do you think causes it to be more active during sleep?

Everything relaxes when we sleep - including the anal sphincter; or at least enough to encourage gs to escape.

Gas happens 24/7, it's just we're so busy during the day that we don't really notice.

It has never occurred to me about the body relaxing..That makes since as during the day the pressure does build and it is often hard to keep it in check... being a women ..I was always taught it impolite to let loose in public or at all around others.. confine it to the loo! This however became increasingly harder to do after the birth of my children..... does loss of muscle control add to this???
During the day I am always aware of gas build up and am keenly aware.. they don't just sneak out... although they can come on quickly after consumption of very fiberous food and onions etc...
broccoli too!

thanks Chris
