Title: Why does talking about food make me hungry?
Post by: brad tittle on 11/07/2008 10:05:57
brad tittle  asked the Naked Scientists:

You all talk about crisps (potato Chips) and "force" me to open a
bag... If you hadn't talked about them, I wouldn't have opened them...

Oh my poor waistline.

I think its rather like talking about sex.. it stimulates and produces fluid to smooth intercourse, where talking about food or seeing it may stimulate the production of stomache acid in preparation of the digestion of the food... in order to ease the food into the intestines and out!

I think that the talk of food stats that acid move around in the tummy more so tou are able to detect the emptyness in there. because its sloshing around in there with nothing to decompose so your tummy begins to rumble.. alerting your body for the need to feed it..

Our eyes and olfactory stimuli can aide to that just as thoughts of the food we discuss creates that image which we associate with Chow time.... so it stirs the acids making you experience that hunger.. I do wonder if there is a chemical change in the brain that triggers that fluid release into the stomach upon thought  ...Obviously a thought can stimulate certain feelings but is there actually some sort of chemical let down from the brain that prompts it?
