Just thought you'd like to know that as expected (because I am a complete and total cynic) my new super puter has been crashing and blue screening all the time. It has now been diagnosed as a memory failure !
lol...8gb of RAM and a lot of memory to go crapo !
The computer came with a report that it had been booted 100 x before despatch...
...do you think my cynicism is on solid ground ?

Just a wild guess, but there could be something wrong with it.

That is certainly a most licentious guess displaying a copious demonstration of dereliction of non-restraint !

There sending you new RAM...Instead of a whole new puter? You mean you have to install it too... although I know you can do it.... just seems they should do it!
-
OMG, Watch out sheepy, you've got a ram on his way to you!!!
-
Oh dear, you're super puter is crapo...~!

Uh oh !...Lube at the ready !!

Yep, hopefully it won't be for long !...however, they did say that before they send it to me they want me to get inside the box and take out some memory to detremine if it's the whole 8gb that needs replacing !...Cripes..that means I have to do stuff like open the box and do the memory check again..
I've never done that before...I'm going to have to use a screwdriver !.......I don't even know if my puter is a diesel or lead free !....and then I have to de-staticise myself too !
-
....and then I have to de-staticise myself too
I thought the rabbi did that sort of thing.

I think the new RAM might come with a big screw driver!

Oh dear. I am very sorry to hear that.
Being an extreme cynic myself when it comes to modern computers and the reliability/stability thereof ... I would suggest a better course of action would be to return the goods as faulty and ask for a replacement or refund. Under UK law, you are not obliged to accept a repair on goods which turn out to be faulty very soon after you get them. You don't want to be spending your hours sorting it out, and you certainly don't want to give the supplier any opportunity at all to suggest that you broke it, if it's not sorted out soon.
If you accept repairs (or even swapping bits in and out yourself), and especially if you get no joy, then as the days and weeks clock up you weaken your rights to a replacement/refund anyway.
I'm not sure what you're implying with the 100 boots before you got it.
- You might be suggesting the machine wasn't new, and was in fact a re-shipped return. In which case the goods weren't "new".
- You might be suggesting they knew there was a problem at the factory, and after 100 reboots they still hadn't got to the bottom of it (in which case you don't want to be spending time on it).
Being extremely paranoid/cynical I might also worry that if the memory were flaky that this could lead it to write something corrupted back to the disk which in turn could cause more probs...
Return it for a refund or replacement (your call).
Before sending it back, make a note of the serial number(s) of the present machine (and maybe make a tiny surreptitious mark (eg a line/dot/squiggle on the back with a spirit-pen) on it so you'd know if they'd tried to return you the same one on the sly).

Good Good advice....in my humble opinion!
-
Very good advice. They should sell you a computer that works. Not too much to ask is it?
I got a shiny new laptop just over a year ago, and it had vista on it. I don't know who thought that idea up, but I won't darken your minds with my thoughts on this matter. I finally got round to down-grading to XP, and guess what? It's not crashed since, its much faster, doesn't hang or disconnect from the internet every few seconds and it doesn't ask me if I'm really sure, I'm sure, I'm sure that I really really want to click that button every time I want to do something.
Only problem is, it seems the DVD decoder thingy is not compatible with XP, so I can't watch DVD's on it anymore. Still, its worth it not to have to worry about breaking the window as the laptop is hurled through it any more.
-
Yep Neil, some computers never work as they are expected to do (most in fact:)
Send it back, or better still, ask where they are and tell them that you are coming in with it, expecting a new working one and some compensation too:), act really pissed of at their suggestion that you should install the memory, will the guarantee still be valid if you open it for example?
-------
Fishytails you can see what brand your DVD is in the - control panel- system - Hardware- and there you will find -Device Manager- open that and look for your DVD player. When you know the brand you goggle for "drivers your_exact_brandname download" and make sure its for the right OS (aka XP f ex.) Another way is to look at that exact model of laptop, and look for the specifications for it there, then goggle again for the driver, if you're lucky that same site may have them.
