My mother and her husband, Ed, just had a nerve-wracking experience on a trip to Italy. Apparently Whitey Bulger, infamous Boston mobster who is on the FBI top 10 list, was recently spotted in somewhere in Italy with his main squeeze. Ed bears a striking resemblance to Whitey:

Ed, and my mom, were riding in the airport rental car shuttle in Naples, when the driver believed he had the notorious gangster (and a fat reward). The shuttle was stopped and all the passengers, except the unlucky couple were told to depart. Police officers, several with automatic weapons, then stormed the van and surrounded my mom and Ed. The police escorted them to a small security room in the airport where they were questioned for several hours. My mom finally contacted the local American Consulate, and at the Consul's insistence, the police took fingerprints amd ran them through the FBI database and Interpol. A couple of hours later, the Naples police reluctantly allowed them to finally continue on their trip, with apologies. My mom and Ed are in their mid-80's.
Planning an "escaped fugitive" party for their return, complete with prison stripes and fake I.D.'s.

Oh My Gawwdddd!!! How horrifying! Your poor mom and Ed! How are they now?
Hope they're able to enjoy the rest of their trip. Perhaps Ed should have a T-shirt made that says "Don't call police - I'm NOT Whitey Bulger!"

This happened a few days ago, so even they are laughing about it now (probably not so funny at the time).
Course, now that it's over with no harm done, I find it hilarious.
Due back in a couple of days. Thought we might sponsor a Whitey lookalike contest. Yellow ribbons- hadn't thought of that- great idea.

How interesting that it was the shuttle driver. Or is that really all he is? I reckon he's a security agent working there to keep an eye on who was coming through the airport. It's a dead cert that the British security services have agents doing that sort of thing.
