Title: How much ATP is produced in the Krebs Cycle alone?
Post by: earisme on 10/04/2004 19:07:53
Hi there, can someone please tell me how much ATP is produced in the Krebs Cycle alone.  I have been trying to figure this out for the longest time.

Thanks
Beth

Hey beth, I'm not exactly sure what you are asking here.  If you just want to know the whole kerebs cyle its all over the internet.  Here is the first one that came up on google. http://www.people.virginia.edu/~rjh9u/krebsum.html  its pretty straight foreward.  you can see where ther ATP is produced.  You can also see that it comes about from the phosphorylation of ADP.  If none of this answers your question you'll have to be a little more speciffic.

This is a signature.... AND YOU WILL LIKE IT!!

Hi there, I guess what I am trying to say is that I am trying to find the total amount of energy produced just for the Krebs cycle/1 molecule of glucose.  So I am guessing that a total of 6 NADH, 2 ATP, and 2 FADH2 are being produced.  Because I think that I learned somewhere that 1 NADH = 3 ATP, so I would have a total of 18 ATP (6x3); 1 FADH2 = 2 ATP, so I would have 4 ATP from that and then the 2 regular ATP equalling a total of 24 ATP?  This is what I am thinking.  If anyone sees anything wrong with this please let me know.  Thanks

It would seem that the contributor is trying to understand cell biochemistry by taking a rather static and sterile, text book approach to the subject. In the real system the levels of constituents  are not rigidly fixed as classical biochemistry would suggest. This is partly because the subsystems are not isolated but interact and largely because all living entities, not least cells, are highly autodynamic because the relevant control reactions operate in their oscillatory mode.  Thus ATP levels, NAD coenzyme oxidation state and other components (including protein levels, enzyme activities  and even cell shape) are varying rhythmically at high frequency. (see for example, Cell Biol. Intl. 24: 569-580, 2000). Unfortunately most cell scientists ignore this reality with the consequence that many of their experimental results are open to question and they are unable to provide answers for major problems.

Technically, there is NO ATP formed in the Kreb's cycle from glycolysis products.  There are two GTP formed (which are ATP equivalents) and the rest are electron carriers that bring energy to electron transport to produce ATP.  Just so you're clear.

Dongilbert, you've mentioned this topic a couple of times and I'm interested, but all the sources you've mentioned require subscriptions to access the papers...have any links to online articles with at least free abstracts?
