my headteacher gave us a did you knwo assembly and he said what we stand on is 99% empty space and im like huh??? how can this be? is it because the universe is so vast that our planet only takes 99% volume? or is he telling porkey pies?

your teacher is telling the truth. Atoms are 99% empty space. Atoms are so empty that you can squeeze the earth to the size of a penny. If we squeezed the earth to this size it would turn into a black hole and object so dense that nothing can escape it not even light.
The scientist that discovered this became afraid that he would fall through the floor. [
