Title: What causes an eye to change colour at the age of 2?
Post by: Beaker on 14/07/2009 19:09:24
HAS ANYONE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON THE FOLLOWING?

My daughter was born with both eyes a nice bright blue (both Mum and Dad have blue eyes).

When she was age 2.5, I noticed they had changed colour, the right eye was now hazel and the left eye remained bright blue!

I noticed they had changed while looking at some photographs. As they changed so gradually I just hadn't noticed, when you see someone you know well, I guess you don't really "look" at them properly as you presume you know what they look like.

Can anyone tell me what has caused this, will the eyes stay different colours?

Will they change back? And lastly does anyone know of any health implications?

It seems bizarre. She has had no head injury or trauma or any medical reason for the change...

Thanks, ellie

Hi RD.

Thanks for that information!

I don't think she has any of the symptoms of anything unpleasant, but just to be sure I'll take her for an eye test in the next week or so.

Thanks for taking the time to find out that information from me. One of the links was something I hadn't seen and was really informative   [:)]

I've made myself feel a bit queezy looking at all the horrific sick eye pictures, there's something quite yukky about eyelids peeled back and oouzing malformed eyes! <shiver> LOL

Hi Karen

Thanks for your kind comments!
I've emailed you a whole piccy of her so you can see what she REALLY looks like!

You can't notice her different colour eyes in most photos, that's how I missed it for so long as it just looks like one's in more shadow than the other.

I've really enjoyed this forum, people are so friendly and helpful!

I'll take her for an eye test in the next week or so.

Ask the opthalmologist to measure her "W index for dystopia canthorum" ...

[Might want to add a hearing test too]

Thanks RD

That was just the kick I needed to book the appointment. Just booked an eye test for Saturday, so she can be checked for any abnormalities. I shall have another read of the known complications in case I need to ask questions.

Thanks for the great help. I notice you help so many people RD, where do you find the time??

Are you from a science background, or are you just like me, who loves all things science based or technical?

The W index could be measured from a photograph if a scale was included, (e.g. ruler on forehead),
but the type of camera lens used could distort the proportions of the face and give a false value.
Better to have the ophthalmologist measure it accurately.

RD Thanks so much for your incredible infomation. I will certainly be getting this checked out. Her school hearing test she passed but I expect that's a pretty basic one, so I'll look into it further.

I have another daughter, although both her eyes are blue, she has hypopigmentation of her hair and has a white forelock.

She is coming up for 18 and is doing well with no medical worries, how extrordinary, as I see the white forelock is mentioned in Waardenburg Syndrome symptoms, Oh my!

I'll let you know how we get on, I can't thank you enough for the time you've spent researching this for me!

Yes Neil. You too have been wonderful help he he

Although it's a shame none of my posts have yet inspired you to create one of your wonderful diagrams...

Chris mentioned on air about your fabulous egg ventilation diagram! LOL

Your posts Neil are a joy to read and I can see Karen's a regular poster too. I've only started posting recently.

Did you see my FARMED salmon question in Environment? Scared myself silly as I've now read online that you should only eat farmed Scottish salmon 3 times a year and I'm eating it once a week including 4 cans of Mercury high Tuna! And I wondered why my memory was going (Mercury poisoning)!

I've been looking on the web about the eye problem, but I'm not as good as RD for finding the most appropriate information. Thank goodness there are people like yourselves out there all helping others!

Did I mention my memory was going?   [;)]

Hi all.

I've found out that my little 5 year old has no underlying health risks or issues at this stage in her development.  [:)]

She passed her eye test with flying "heterochromic" colours! LOL

Thanks for eveyone who added their thoughts.

I've told her she's a bit special having such an unusual condition and at the moment she feels quite proud of her different colour eyes.

I have entered Karina into a Next catalgue competition, but I don't think you can see that she has different colour eyes in this picture, what do you think?
I hope the link below works.
Sadly I expect they wouldn't accept her to model with different colour eyes... I've sent in this picture, not trying to deceive them, but they may be quite shocked when they see her in real life! LOL

If you want to vote for her, I would be really appreciative :-)
Sometimes different can also be very beautiful! What do you think?  [;)]
