LIZZIE BORDEN

Lizzie borden took an ax gave her mother 40 whacks, when she saw what she had done gave her brother 41,
ok this is based on a real story, so what possesses people to do something like that is it a chemical imbalance or what? i mean to kill not only your mother but your brother and actually count how many times you whack them, you think you would come to your senses[xx(]

Hello Again!
I think that there are a number of Mental disorders that could cause someone to go completely loopy like that. Schizophrenia (don't pick me up on the spelling) or something like that.
Of course there are just some complete psychos out there (aka Ian Huntley) who have claimed to be mad.
What causes these disorders is another matter though.
Any ideas.

Mosy permanent mental disorders that we have some clue about deal with a lack or over abundance of transmission in the brain of one, or a combination of neurotransmitors (seratonin, epinephrine, etc) This can either come apart by a loss of neurons, or some sort of chemical manipulation. Remember that your cells resopn at different rates to stimuli, and that stimuli can come from other cells, chemicals you put into your body, or physical influences outside of your body. Some stimuli may lead to a long term mental disorder, but it is possible that conditions might just be right to create a very temporary but severe imbalance in your brain.

When my brain chemistry was messed up with mercury I thought some pretty weird stuff. It seemed rational at the time, but in retrospect (with normal chemistry) I was whakko. It's like trying to walk normally with knees that won't bend.

I like your qualifier, Donnah, in respect to normal chemistry... its important to remember that everything is relaitive and what we see as normal is completely based on what we are used to. If everyone had Hg in their brain all the time, the way you'd been thinking would have been considered "normal"

That's a good point Justin. It's also part of why the cycle of abuse continues from generation to generation. When you grow up knowing only abuse you think it is normal. Somehow you must step outside the current paradigm to see that there are other possibilities.
