What is the melting point of bakelite? And are there any better plastics?

Hi Bren....I don't know the answer to your question but i did find this site which made interesting reading http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00038.htm

I don't think Bakelite melts when heated. It disintegrates into carbon and probably hydrogen. By "better", do you mean higher operating temperatures? Yes there are, but what you are doing determines which one you want. There are high temperature epoxies, silicones, polyimides, polyamides, polysulfones, and of course flourocarbons.
