Title: How Can I Test The Accuracy Of My Treadmill ?
Post by: neilep on 25/08/2008 19:03:01
Dear Treadmillologists ,

This is my treadmill !

Well, it's not the actual one in my room cos the one in my room is covered in salty sweat stains ! (I bet ewe really wanted to know that ! )

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

Nice eh ?

Is there a way , using household stuff, that I can clarify that when it says it's turning at 5mph that it in fact is ?

I did think about bringing the car inside but then I would need two treadmills for both front wheel drives....a motorbike won't help either as wifey says putting a motorbike on a treadmill is silly !!..yeah right !!..what does she know eh ?

so, is there a way to determine the accuracy of speed ?

Thanking ewe.

What about using a clock with a second hand.... or your bicycle tire (front) hooked to a mileage thingy?

Those are all good and trusted techniques...but I don't have a mileage thingy...I do have a clock though....what do I do with it ?...ask it ?..LOL !!

Ok..

"erhmm...err..clock.."
"Oh what is it now ? sheepy, can't ewe see I'm busy keeping time and all that ?"
"Sheesh !!..sorry clock...but can ewe tell me how fast my treadmill spins ?"
"...tch tch !!...yes yes i can "
*sheepy sighs and coughs*
" erhmm..go on then "
"Ok Ok !!...keep your wool on....I can tell you that your treadmill spins fast "
"Oh just great.....Thanks a lot "

Oh well...I'm convinced !!

I would mark a spot on your treadmill belt with white chalk, and first, time the rotations per minute.....according to the clock Plus then you need to know the length of the belt .. you can get this by marking a 1 on the first mark, then  mark the belt again at the point it goes under and measure the distance between mark 1 and 2 marks. Then move the belt forward where 2nd mark is at front and make a 3rd mark at point of it going under again..measure again. keep moving belt forward and adding up the length in total of the belt stop when it gets back to 1.So say your belt is 4 ft per rotation figure how many rotations per hour by counting the full rotations back to 1 and come up with the total miles per hour walked.. You should be able to get it into 4 fifteen minute segments and put the 4 together per hour and then compare it to your treadmills calculations.. that should be very close.. shouldn't it?

so if the belt comes round every 1 minute give or take at the speed you walk how many times will it come round in 1 hour?Calculation how many ft are there in a mile and how fast have you done a mile .. etc etc etc.. I would think it may provide a very close calculation!

A pedometer will tell you how far you have run (+/- 10% (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5095940.stm)).

A paedometer will bleep when Garry Glitter is nearby  [:)]

Why not get one of those wheels that the council use for measuring the road and sit that on it.

Thank ewe Kareny mam !

If I start writing on my treadmill with chalk though I will end up just creating a grandmaster. As a sheepy, I am of course an artist and thus can not just apply marks on a plain canvas without creating a scene !

The idea sounds credible though !

Karen has the right idea.
Draw a chalk line on the belt, count how many revolutions it makes in a minute,
(from the photo I'd estimate 5mph is going to be about 70 revolutions per minute).

Multiply the number of revolutions per minute by 60 to get revolutions per hour.

Multiply revolutions per hour by the circumference of the belt in meters to get meters per hour.

Multiply the meters per hour figure by 0.00062137 to get miles per hour.

You should count the revolutions when the treadmill is under load, i.e. someone is running on it.

Do you really care?
You can knacker yourself fine without knowing how fast you are running!
Better still, sit down and have a beer?

Were it not for the fact that I do not imbibe alcohol I would indeed sit down for a beer. Instead I shall mime it ! *of course being a non alcy  makes Jack a dull sheepy, very anti social and a severe lack of partisan chums * *le sigh*

...I am though on a determined ' health drive ' at the moment and am keeping strict daily records of my time/calories burned etc...and so....as a part time statistic freak I just wanted to find out if my data supplied by my treadmills' display was accurate !

Neil why not ditch the treadmill and go for a good, long walk instead that's free then chalk also measurements as such wont matter. Take the family possibly.

That's a great idea Rosalind and we all do go for walks and I supplement my time on the treadmill with cycling too.

But, when it's snowing or raining, or 3am for instance..it's so much easier to jump on the treadmill. I get a recording of how far I have gone (yesterday for example I did 8.1 miles...and I average about 5mph...I do fast walking and there's no way my family would be able to keep up !....This determination to lose weight and regain the use of 75% of the clothes in my wardrobe is unfailing. In May (when I had a full health check MOT)..I was 16 stone 11lbs ( that's 235lbs or 107kg)

..TODAY !!..I am 13 stone 2lbs (184lbs or 83.5kgs)....my target weight is 11 stone..and you know what ?...I AM going to do it too....and you know what else ?..I am going to maintain that weight off too !

Never been so focused about anything before in my life !

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYY !!!!

So, yes, I do go walking...but I need the treadmill to calculate/guage/test myself and for covenience when it comes to the kind of hours I keep !

Good on you Neil!  I am also going through some weight loss (mine came from having babies... oh, ok, from too many chip butties) but I am *almost* at my goal weight now (about 5kilos off) and it's great to get back into clothes that I once thought I'd have to give away. I've lost 20kilos!!

Best of luck with it!

ps I listen to the Naked Scientists podcast while at the gym. It's great - about an hour and lots of ones I haven't heard to get me through to the next week.. or like now when they are on some sort of holiday.

I am so proud of my ability to wear all my old jeans and trousers and shirts and suits and ..well..EVERYTHING !!...I am having to punch holes in my belts as they are all too long now for my waistline !!

Where did you last see them?

Only joking- well done and good luck to all those of you trying to lose weight and / or get fitter. (I'm a little under 70Kg and about 5'8" in spite of living on chips and steak while taking no real exercise. I also have low blood pressure and a low resting pulse rate. Annoying aren't I?)

Neil good luck and you'll surprise yourself by the amount of weight that you've lost already also when you do get to your
"target" weight but do not lose it too fast or the weight will return. I hope not.

...lets just say that this particularly time I am especially highly motivated to win win win and continue to do so...and will do !!...

Thank you so much for your kind support and encouragement !

I still have two stone to lose so, i'll save them for you and then they're all yours !

My daily intake is circa 1000 calories...but my daily burning on the treadmill is about *goes to average August *..ok..in Augsust...doing six days a week I averaged a burn of 772 calories a day on the treadmill. On Sundays, I take a whole day off and go on a free for all eating session !...I don't pig out but allow myself a day of treats !!..ie a proper meal out....no holds barred !!

Because of this..on Saturdays I usually do a good couple of hours or more and have burned in excess of 1200 calories , supplementing with isotonic drinks !..I feel fantastic !!

Today I cycled 4 miles

.... and did 7.1 miles on the treadmill..that burned 862 !(according to the treadmill readout...

gonna do it !!...gonna do it...gonna maintain it too !!..I have to !!
