Title: The Weight Of An Egg Before & After Cooking ?

My kids had hard boiled eggs....yummy !! (with soldiers of course)

Does an egg weigh more in liquid form or when in solid cooked form ?

I don't think the denaturing of the proteins making it go solid will alter it too much, but when you boil an egg it will absorb water which will make it heavier - if on the other hand you fry it, you will evaporate water making it lighter. If you microwave it whole, it will explode, making a horrible mess and spreading it all over your microwave, making weight measurements challenging.

Dave is right, but depending on your age and expectations of microwaving a egg. The mess can also be wonderful, unless you are the one assigned to clean the microwave!

be very careful if you do this - If the egg hasn't exploded treat it like an unexploded firework. I do this in a couple of plastic bags and once it hadn't exploded so I took it out, was opening the outer bag when it went off. the only thing stopping me having superheated egg on my face wasthe second plastic bag.

I think the plastic bag approach is the best way to go....though I do hate to ruin a perfectly good egg !!

...having said that...it may still be edible if contained within the bag !!

Paul...we only thought of the question whilst the eggs were being consumed...so next time we'll give it a try and weigh before and after !!

Karen "soldiers" must be a specially british thing.  They are slices of buttered bread or toast cut into fingers about 1-2cm by 5-10 cm to dip into the runny yolk of the egg.  It is a bit pointless to use them with hard boilsd eggs!

It depends if the cooked form is still hot; in that case it weighs more: E = mc.2
However it's not so easy to measure the difference...
