Title: Two months of rain in 24 hours!
Post by: paul.fr on 27/06/2007 18:56:47
Possibly the wrong place to post, but...

The other day it was reported that we had Two months of rain in 24 hours! Which two months do they use for this figure?

Probably 2 average months -take the total rainfall over the last 10 years and divide by 120.
Incidentally, I got some funny looks when I went to buy an uninteruptible power supply earlier today. The shop didn't have any electricity.

I saw news footage of the floods around Sheffield & Rotherham. They had it pretty bad there.

Here's the sort of thing we got. This was after 1 night of rain. The photos don't show the depth of the water, which was about 12".

I'm about 130 miles from the worst of the flooding. We didn't get it anywhere near as bad. Fortunately it didn't rain at all yesterday & today it has only been light showers.

I live in Sheffield, but there's a lot of hills in this city and I'm half way up one of them. The worst of the flooding isn't far away from me, just a few miles. Some bits are only 15 mins walk, but the only problem I have is that the electricity keeps failing. My best wishes go with those who are having real problems and those who lost loved ones.

The intro on this is a bit naff, but it illustrates the point

The local paper's website.

We have to cross a couple of rivers & a canal but so far the roads have been OK. Those pics I posted were the result of 1 of the rivers (a small 1) bursting its banks.

This pic will give you some idea how high up the stables are.

Very glad your horses are OK and well above water.

However, I must point out that everything that happens in Texas is bigger than anywhere else. After four weeks of continual rain a town just 25 miles from where I live has had 19.5 inches of rain in 3 hours. That is more than half a yard of rain or, in terms of my body, this water would come up to my knees and I am 5' 11' tall.

http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Top_News/2007/06/29/texas_gets_195_inches_of_rain_in_3_hours/7807/

I am starting to get an algal bloom in my armpits. And this is an area where average rainfall is less than 30 inches a year.

Those fields in the pics I posted previously are under even more water now. If it's the same when I go past them later I'll get more pics.

Is that the Cherwell? That's the only river I can think of near Banbury.....

No, this is smaller than the Cherwell - only about 6-7' wide by those meadows. I'm not sure what it's called.

I was going to get some pics but the batteries ran out in my camera & I didn't have any spares with me. When I came past it earlier it was in the process of overflowing again and water was pouring up a public footpath in quite a little torrent. It's raining again now & is due to continue for most of the night so I'll try to get some pics in the morning.
