Title: Why do newly-applied braces on teeth hurt so much?
Post by: Seany on 30/03/2008 12:21:08
Hi,

I recently got braces [:(] and after I got them, it didn't hurt for like the hour. And then I tried eating lunch, and OWWW, it was uber painful!.. I couldn't bite
For almost a week, it hurt like this, and also my top teeth and my bottom teeth didn't line up, (as I did the top first. Due to get the bottom teeth braces in about 3 weeks)

Why was there so much pain for the first week or so? I couldn't bite anything because it just sent shocks up my teeth, and they felt like they were wobbling so much!!

Except now after a week, my teeth are perfectly lined up.. [;D]

I think there is a lot of stress on the teeth to pull them in line with each other and the braces I believe can be adjusted regularly to correct the slant or the alignment.. Did you have a over bite or under bite or just a few crooked ones?

All that wrenching on them kind of loosens them but they do tighten up again as the teeth adjust to the new position...

Yup... but it didn't hurt if I didn't do anything.. But when it came to chew.. Boy the pain..

Erm.. As to the alignment.. My bottom two incisors hit the inside of my top two incisors.. So it makes it a bit hard to chew

Yah... it will hurt... but the most painful part of the situation are the people who have never worn braces telling you it will all be worth it in the end. Cause guess what, I had my braces taken off 7 years ago, have worn all of my retainers for the recommended period of time (I still have two permanent retainers) and my teeth have started to shift.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your teeth are going to hurt for the next 18 months, or however long you have to wear the mouth metal. Adjustments are the worst.

Yup 18 months.. Now about 17..

But apparently it only hurts for 1-2 hours max after tightening them every month and a half. (Only 12 times)

I gotta get my bottom ones on now. And that's gunna hurt.
