Title: What is the fizziest soft drink?
Post by: michaelwilliamhayfield on 11/07/2009 13:30:03
michaelwilliamhayfield asked the Naked Scientists:

I am doing a science fair project on what is the fizziest soft drink and doesn't go flat flat the fastest.

How could I test this?

Thanks

What do you think?

Now I really haven't a clue as to the answers to these questions, but I guess that since all fizzy pop drinks are made from mostly water, the fizziest would be the one which the manufacturer puts the most gas into and they probably all lose their gas, when the pressure is released, at the same rate.

A fizzy-poppologist is required to contradict or confirm this.

Do you have a good set of weighing scales?
It should be possible to weigh the bottle before and after (carefully) letting the gas out.
A litre of pop usually contains something like 3 litres of CO2 in solution which is about 5.5 grams. If you can weigh the bottle to that accuracy then you have an easy way to measure the stuff.

Tescos American Ginger Ale is well fizzy ! just a small bit fizzes up to fill an entire pint glass...which is nice !

Actually..I hate ginger..so why do I like Ginger ale ?...one of those ' we'll never know' questions !..The origin of the cosmos will be answred first !

This may be relevant to your investigation …

[Henry's law] also only applies simply for solutions where the solvent does not react chemically with the gas being dissolved. A common example of a gas that does react with the solvent is carbon dioxide, which forms carbonic acid (H2CO3) to a certain degree with water.
