Title: Methydopa Blood Pressure Tabs (HELP)
Post by: neilep on 30/04/2005 16:33:14
Can anyone advise me on a way to help my wife regain energy ?..while she's taking these tablets (1000mg aday) they are knocking her out. She's not a zombie but is just soooooooo tired and lethargic all day every day.

Is there either:

1: A way that she can regain her alertness without stopping the tabs or

2: An alternative tablet which doesn't sap her strength

We're desperate..it's hard being Mummy, daddy, Cook, Cleaner, carer, bather, Income bringer, house husband etc etc.....I'm nearly at the end of my tether....I finally got everyone to sleep by 3am (they all got colds and coughs) and then I was up again at 6am when my daughter awoke.....wifey just can barely keep her eyes open and has only now (at 16:30pm ) just got up.....ane she's fallen asleep already in the chair !!

HELP !!...I don't know how to manage as I have a business to run aswell.

Yes I can help, but will you listen?

Lift the head end of the bed by fifteen cm's or six inches, so you sleep on a slope. Then reduce the tablets by half, as the uptake of drugs is for some reason higher with the bed tilted.

The best way to lower blood pressure is to use raw chilli, which can be juiced with fruit juice to make a nice peppery drink. eaten with cheese to help cool the mouth. Or get some cayenne capsules and take those to lower the bp. They work by opening up the arteries and veins, a bit like taking your finger off the end of the hosepipe.

Andrew,

I'm listening. Getting wifey to may take some raw chilli juice will take  ' pepperation '......what about Tabasco ? will that work ?

Lifting the bed up shouldn't be a problem, It might help me get to sleep too, but I should probably get the docs advice before changing the dosage of this prescribed medication, though in frustration I have suggested she stop taking them but she won't.

Thank you very much for your suggestion, it's very much appreciated, and if I may say, your homepages are very interesting, haven't read them in depth, just have time to scan them but all very good stuff indeed, congratulations.

Neil, the dose might be too high anyway that shes on, try halving the does to strat with, or tell the doctor what they are doing to her and try another medication with fewer side effects.

The bed will work for both of you!

Thanks Andrew, I've tried to reason with her about halving the dose but she prefers to wait to see the consultant in about ten days.....thanks,

Neil

Methyldopa is an extremely old antihypertensive drug, which fell into disuse largely because of side effects such as those your wife encountered.

There is a host of more modern, safer and more effective antihypertensive drugs, and your wife needs to ask her physician to transfer her onto one of those.

There is no reason on earth why she should put up with such unpleasant side effects, when there are so many alternative therapies available.

Actually, methyldopa is the recommended first drug of choice in the management of hypertension in pregnancy / pre-eclampsia. This is on the basis of its safety record for both mother and baby.

Good second-line agents are calcium channel antagonists, such as nifedipine, or the blood-vessel relaxing agent hydralazine. Another possibility is labetolol, an adrenergic receptor blocker.

Other traditionally well tolerated antihypertensives, such as diuretics, are not used because they don't work in pregnancy, and ACE inhibitors are contra-indicated because they have been linked to oligohydramnios (too little fluid around the baby), hypotension (low blood pressure !), renal (kidney) failure, and intra-uterine death in the foetus.

I'd also strongly urge you not to tinker with the drug doses without asking the managing doctor / consultant. I would, however, recommend that you to approach the managing physician and request a switch to a second-line agent on the grounds of poor tolerance and side effects.  You'd be amazed at the number of people who never ask and just put up with (sometimes horrendous) side effects because they don't realise that there are alternatives.

Where was it mentioned that his wife is pregnant?  I must have missed that.

Of course any change in medication must be with the approval and cooperation of the physician in charge of her case.

The point, as has been said, is that there are very many antihypertensives available, and there is likely to be one drug, or combination of drugs that will do the job without producing untoward side effects.

Neil's posted about various questions relating to his wife's pregnancy recently (backache etc)... I don't think there was any mention of it on this thread which'd be why you didn't pick it up!
