Title: Alicante...
Post by: kittykat on 04/07/2006 09:01:50
Hmm... I've already admitted to being an audiophile in another thread, dare I start a thread that may reveal my passion for vino as well? [:I]

I've just finished listening to the 5th Feb 2006 episode of TNS (and checking the transcript http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/shows/2006.02.05.htm ) and Steve from North London was asked a question in Fact and Fiction about Alicante - about whether or not it was a wine... Steve said Fact, and Chris said fiction.

So now I am asking for a clarification.  I am very familiar with a local wine here called Rockford's Alicante (it is perhaps one of the Barossa Valley wine region's most widely known rose's, and is on almost every restaurant wine list).  Now I am also aware of the fact that it's full name is Alicante Bouchet (and yes, for those among you in the know, I am aware that the traditional spelling of the grape is Bouschet, but there is a story behind the reason this wine is misspelt without the "s" in Bouschet, if you're interested http://www.camwheeler.com/wine/?p=25 )

So, now for the question. Fact or Fiction - is alicante a type of wine?

Chris... [:D] is this an oversight (let's face it - I have no idea if RAB is even an export wine, us South Ozlanders may be the only folk to even know of it's existence) or do you not actually classify it as a wine in the contxt of the question, as technically the grapes are a blend, and the term Alicante may have been coined for this particular blend alone?

PS... Did you know that Alicante Bouchet is one of the few red grapes that actually possess red juice? Most red wine gets its color from the red skins, not the juice.
