Title: Science Teachers
Post by: McGee on 10/07/2003 23:22:26
I just found your wonderful site.  Are any others of you out there science teachers?

Welcome McGee

there's a whole mixed bag here from budding scientists, science students, doctors, layabouts (aka my brother !) etc

What do you teach ?

I teach 8th grade Middle School.  It's a mix of Life, Physical and Earth Science.  Most people get a terrified look on their face when I tell them I teach in middle school.  I like it though.  They're old enough not to wipe snot on your pants leg, but they're still impressionable enough they can be a little intimidated:-)

Well Exodus, just what was it you were doing while Chris gave you the title?  I say if the shoe fits[;)]...

I'm no layabout, Layabouts are herberts that do nothing with their lives and stand around on street corners smoking dog ends and wolf whistling girls... I don't do anything along those lines. Another description of layabout could in fact describe the fact that i was "laying about" but i wasnt doing that either. I may have been on holiday, but i get bored if i sit around! Claire and i walked up a mountain on one particular day, tokk us just under 5 hours to summit, was worth it though!

So nah, i'm no layabout, lazy sometimes, but no layabout.

You said "smoking dog ends" is one of the many splendid things that "layabouts" do. I've never heard that...Is it a cigarette?

Howdy McGee.......I suspect "dog ends" have little to do with your original post. Thread drift is a disease for which there is no cure. I am not a science teacher but a good friend of mine teaches Middle School Science in the Pacific Northwest. He is passionate about the subject and I know his passion spills over to the kids. He instills a "sense of wonder" in them that will hopefully remain throughout their life. That and critical thinking skills are paramount to a life long pursuit of science and all that surrounds us!!

On a side note, the Library of Congress hosts a website called: Everyday Mysteries that is kid friendly and highly educational. Keep up the good work, good teachers are rare!

Its the remnants of someone elses cigarette that the little herberts pick up off the floor and smoke themselves! How WRONG is that! and yes it does happen! [:(]

What's a herbet?

Am I dead? Am I alive? I'm both!

Sad case blokes of about 19 with greasy hair, pony tails, baseball caps (usually on back to front). Tend to drink lager, talk absolute sh1t at the tops of their voices, and almost always wear a necklace or medallion of some sort.

They are also easy to identify on the basis of their inability to walk like a normal person (a gait specially evolved to avoid tripping over their ridiculous baggy trousers that sweep the pavement as they walk).

Other defining characteristics include a penchant for crappy old fiestas or Nissan Micras that double as mobile discos (stereo usually more powerful than the engine) and, of course, the compulsory massive exhaust system that wouldn't look out of place on a car ferry.

I think that just about sums it up.

I don't believe I've ever seen anyone like that. How extremely odd.

Maybe the punks wouldn't have to talk so loud if someone actually listened to them once in a while.

Right Donnah!  If kids were given the respect they so richly deserve, there would be far fewer "problem" children.

We have them in Australia as well Quantumcat, you must have seen them. It's just that we call them Westies, Bevan's, Homies, and a few other choicer names that I probably shouldn't post.

Today was my sons 4th grade field trip (along with probably 7 other schools!)
It was a science circus. To me it was to short for the cost,
But it held those kids attention for over an hour. They had a blast!
It was just 2 men teaching basic things kids wonder about. Blacklights, gravity, light, friction.
There was alot of humor! I had a good time too. So now we are making a boomerang out of a pizza box!!

Sounds like a good field trip.  Children learn sooo much better when it's presented in a way that interests them, so I think your money was well spent.  Did the boomerang work?

Donna, I deceided to wait unit and finish it when we can go out side! I can see all sorts of things broken. Yes the money was worth it. I just wish it had been longer, Maybe I was having to much fun..ha

OzzieMom, I used to own a set of books about kid's science projects that came with some encyclopedias that I bought.  There were lots of fun and educational things to try and I wondered if your local library might have something similar.

BTW that's where I learned that we all have a blind spot in our frontal vision.

OHHH if your a science teacher do all your kids a favour and dont make them write notes for 2 hours!!  I had to do that every day, it was horrible we truly didnt really learn anything!

Anyone interested in setting up a fascinating school experiment with water and tubes, showing that gravity can indeed cause water to flow up. The apparatus consists of nylon tubing used in the pub trade for lifting ales etc from the cellar to the pump, and freely available from any decent landlord. 2 bottles, preferably demijohns, a tray to catch displaced water, some pre boiled water that has cooled, some food colouring a length of string and a few grams of salt or sugar.

I would be delighted to assist and have demonstrated the experiment many times in schools and universities[?]

My Intentions:
Trying to get the experiments into the National Curriculum.

Andrew's experiment is very interesting, however the conclusions he draws from it applying to living systems do not accord with current scientific thinking. You may wish to read the thread discussing his experiments on the site at:
