Title: Amitriptyline and Adrenaline

I have been prescribed Amitriptyline for my back pain and I was reading the instruction inside the box that say it is used to treat depression and bed wetting in children but nothing about its use in pain relief normally? Also my doctor informed me that whilst on the medication I must not take my adrenaline which I carry as I have a nut allergy. Although I have not had a reaction for over 2 years as I am very careful with what I eat I am slightly concerned that if, for any reason I do have a reaction to something containing nuts I am not allowed to use the adrenaline. Why can the two not be taken together?

Adrenaline ADH is used to reabsorb water from the kidney(nephron) as it has receptors on the basolateral surface on the lumenal cells and it attatches with it and creates cAMP which produces a channel protein aqua porin a channel protein in the proximal convoluted tubule and it reabsorb water and the water is reabsorbed from the filtrate and hence less urine is formed.

Please disregard the above post as it has nothing whatsoever to do with the question, and also contains factual errors.

I'll have to look into the interactions of adrenaline and amitriptyline as I was not aware that there was a problem.

Amitriptyline, taken with Adrenaline, can cause low blood pressure and rapid heart rate.  It is used at times for chronic pain.  Also, you shouldn't take it within 2 hours of taking an antacid, because it will interfere with the absorbtion of the drug.  And it interacts with other meds, ie sinus medications.  I would think that with your history of allergy to nuts, your doc might want to reconsider the use of Amitriptyline for your pain.  There are other drugs, that wouldn't rule out the use of your epinephrine in a life threatening situation.  

The Lidoderm (Xylocaine) patches work well for back pain, and are non-narcotic, absorb through the skin, and we've been seeing some good results with pain relief for post op pain.  I might be worth a try.  On a pill note, I found that tramadol hydrochloride (Ultram) works well for pain and is non-narcotic.  Not sure how it interacts with your epinephrine, and would definitely check it out with the doc.

Thank you for your posts. I think I will talk to my GP as I am also allergic to bee stings and a bee landed on me the other day, i was not stung but worried that if i did get stung i could not use my adrenaline. Thanks again.

Tramadol is an opioid and can produce significant side effects in some people.

Thanks for the update on Adrenaline / Amitriptyline though - I didn't know that.

well chris what is the abbreviation of ADH you dont even know this and you want my post to be discarted. well the main function of ADH is the reabsorbtion of water in the kidney rest all functions are secondary and i was just telling him the effect  of ADH i didnt say anything more or less and there is no factual error its physiology.

I stand corrected.  See?  That's what I get for not doing my own research.  Friend of mine gave me one at work the other day when I woke up with a back spasm and pain.  Sure didn't know it was an opiate.  I wouldn't have been taking it at work.  No wonder it worked so well!
