Title: Why Does Caruthers The Fish Spew Out Bubbles ?
Post by: neilep on 02/12/2008 22:35:01
Dears Pisceonologists,

Fish are my all time favourite aquatic vertebrate that live in the sea and ponds and fish’n’chip restaurants.

Look here’s Caruthers !

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

Nice eh ? being delivered next Tuesday.

Do ewe notice something though ?..see those bubbles ?

How come Caruthers spews out bubbles ?..I know he breathes in via his gills  but Caruthers does not take in big blobby bubbles does he ? In fact big blobby bubbles might be bad for Caruthers yes ?!

I thought I’d ask my neighbour, he’s recently had experience of his head being submerged so I chucked him in his bath that I had filled with cold water and asked Ella, a sheepy friend ,to sit on him for a while..she needed a bath too !... I had written my question by chiseling it into his bath.

…..Well…I have to say I was a tad disappointed, I wanted an answer not an impression of a flopping flapping fish !......so…I pushed the button to raise the plug hole thingy and left him to it…..

Hmmmmm now that I think about it…I think it was the plug thing I pushed, though I did notice that the toilet flushed at the same time and they are next to each other and have the same pushy buttony thing…it was dark !...oh well.

Hoping ewe can assist me in my fish query regarding the nature of fishy blobby bubbles.

Thank ewe

Neil

Captive fish will often gulp air at the surface when the surface area of the body of water they are in is insufficient to maintain a high enough oxygen saturation. The water at the surface will have a much higher oxygen saturation.

Goldfish bowls are a good example of insufficient surface area for the whole body of water to absorb sufficient oxygen. Even a fish tank can suffer from low oxygen saturation if the tank is over-populated.

Air can also be taken in when feeding on floating food. Air taken in by either method must be expelled through the mouth so it does not interfear with the fish's buoyancy.

A good fish tank should have air pumped through the water via a diffuser. Not only does this 'aerate' the water, it also helps keep the water moving thus avoiding stagnation.

Putting fish in bowls is a no no, always use a tank to give the greatest possible surface area.

Good stuff, Don, but doesn't a bowl have a larger surface area than a tank? Or are you talking about the "surface" area? Hmmmn, I think that I may have answered my own question. So why an I still going to post this? Any ideas? [;)]

I like it! Let's have a "Finicky Old Gits" club. The FOGs. We could have our own TV programme "One Man and his Fog".

Thanks for this Don1.

Does this also apply to fish in the sea too ?!..I am sure I have seen bubbles coming out of sea fish !!..of course..it could be that I was watching the wrong end !.

This is because of the formula that determines the nature of posting:

Written 75% of Post = Post the post despite questionable acceptance

Written between 50% - 75% + Level of ambiguity = may or may not post despite questionable acceptance

Written less than 50% = Non posting in 99% of cases
