One of the snags of living in the country is the abundance of wild life.
Our house is built into the side of a hill, so the ground floor is partially below ground level. There is a bathroom downstairs at the rear of the house which has a small basement window high on the wall. The window is protected from dirt caving in on it by a semicircular piece of steel that forms a "window well". The window is really just for ventilation, and to allow a small amount of daylight in.
Two winters ago we had an awful lot of snow, and the snow was piled right up to the top of the window well. I happened to be taking a whizz in the downstairs bog one night when, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a face pressed against the window!
Scared the p*ss out of me I can tell you. What a flipping mess! Fortunately the floor is covered with vinyl rather than carpet.
Once I had regained my composure and changed my trousers, I realized that the face was not human, nor that of an alien (although it did look a bit like an alien). It was a deer.
Turns out this little deer had been foraging on the tops of the shrubs that were sticking out above the snow beside the house, slipped, and fell into the window well. Poor thing was probably there for quite a while too. I called a friend and he managed to get a hold of it and lift it out. It scampered off, apparently none the worse.
If anyone can figure out a moral to this story, I'd be interested in hearing it.
