Hey everyone,
I'm currently 27 and work in the entertainment/media industry, which I've very much lost my passion for (and also find employment unstable). I've found over the last few years I've developed a surface interest in the sciences (I was always very good at these in school, just chose to follow a creative path instead). I particularly find myself gravitating towards the subjects of technology, AI, robotics, neuroscience, human-machine relations etc.. I am particularly interested in the developments in the relationships between humans and technology, and we seem to be in an exciting time to be working in these fields. So my questions are:
What particular avenues of study (if any) and future career paths should I look into?
Is 27 too late to be starting, given my complete lack of practical experience in these fields?
Whilst I was once good at maths, I am very very out of practise, and also have no experience computer programming. I'm not really interested having to work all day with advanced mathematics or computer coding. Is this realistically going to be a problem?

Hard to advise because things will change faster and faster and many jobs which exist now will disappear as intelligent software does more and more of the work instead. The medical side may have a longer lifetime to it. I don't see much work being available in relations between machines and people because intelligent systems will work this out for themselves very quickly - it's only a worthwhile area to work in at the moment because people are working with sub-intelligent systems, but that is temporary. Most jobs will disappear whether they're in these fields or not, so this is a really difficult time for anyone to pick a path to go down. If you have any ideas about doing something creative though, something of a kind which machines will not be good at, then that may be a route to a longer lasting career.
[I speak from the perspective of someone working independently on AGI system development and am not part of the mainstream, so I lack the qualifications but have the ability instead. Most poeple in the mainstream would probably ignore me and tell you to do the same.]

It is my experience that work in new technologies tends to be well paid for about ten years then fizzles out , I worked with the early crude monochrome and colour TVs which needed a lot of skilled maintenance now they are considered throw away items when worn.
I also worked with scanners both large and small for the print industry but now they have been killed off by digital cameras.

I'd say go for it. If it is possible stay in your current job while hunting for the new one as you ever know
the results. BUT try, try, try and don't give up. If you lost your heart for what you currently do and it makes you
unhappy, try changing it. And if you love and feel technology then you should learn really fast. You're young (yeah
you are) and it will all be with ease for you. I have a friend older than you who switched his career and it worked out
fine for him :) Good luck mate!
