Title: Luck rules all.
Post by: Dienasty on 14/06/2009 01:28:25
Part 1.

all that we do and say are directly influenced by our experiences.

our experiences are out of our control.

what we do and say is influenced by something out of our control.

Part 2.

If the outcome of a situation (out of our control) is beneficial or good... we call it lucky.

If the outcome of a situation (out of our control) is negative or bad... we call it unlucky.

Part 3.

Since we do not control our situations...
and since our situations lead to experiences...
and those experiences influence our choices and
actions....

all is ruled by luck.

our experiences are out of our control.
I'd like to challenge that remark and take back control!

Luck was invented by luck.

all that we do and say are directly influenced by our experiences.
The logic following this premise only holds if the word, directly, is changed to, completely. Then it is falsified because we know that our past experience only partially determines our future actions. We can devise tests for this.

We make our own luck.

We make our own luck.

Can you recommend a good DIY book on how to make luck, I seem to make a complete pigs ear of it!

No we do not make our own luck. We might be in the right place in the right time but that is different, everyone tries to maximize their happiness, but we still have enormous living differences nation and world wide. With some, even today, living as others slaves. There were a recent example of a Diplomat residing in France whose wife beat her slave to death. No, no joke..

So that statement was pure BS.

As for luck, yeah, it happens.

'Success' It's like the homecoming soldiers and survivors, from a war f ex.
Theirs the only story's you will hear. The dead have no voice.

And 'I made it myself' is one of the most used expressions and if I may say so 'The American dream' in a nutshell. Always heard by those few lucky enough to have been at the right place at the right time, with the 'proper' education/knowledge. You have social structures guaranteeing you a 'place in the sun' more or less but those are human inventions.

Have to disagree with you there. My family and I emigrated to the US. It took a lot of hard work before we obtained our place in the sun. Scandinavian countries seem to guarantee everyone a place in the sun.

You're wrong.

Sweden is a hardworking country. That's why we're so good :)
As for the outlook, it differs.

But stating 'we make our own luck' is one of the most stupid expressions I've read.
You can go out tomorrow and break your neck, and not a damne* thing will guarantee you anything else. You live in world where people are starving to death every day, no cause of their own, more than they've been born in the wrong place, by the wrong parents. Where 'soldiers' take a baby and smash their head against a corner. etc etc. I can give you examples if you like too.

So no, I'm not wrong. If you mean that you had to 'fight' for what you got, and perhaps that you had some luck too then I will agree. But that's the same everywhere.

And 'The American dream' is just that I stated, at least how I see it. But how many Americans live that dream, Geezer, and do you see those that don't as ?

I personally do not believe in ' luck'....I put it all down to happenstance and circumstance !

How about winning the lottery then?
:)

Sorry Geezer, A little tired here, made my viking blood 'flow' I'm afraid ::))
To do your best is always a good thing.

----
But yeah, Neilep. "happenstance and circumstance." sums it up too.
But when it's good we tend to look at it as 'luck', don't we.

Bl* superstition most probably.

Hi Chum,

Agreed , we may treat is as good luck but I personally don't believe in such a thing...nor am I superstitious at all..
If I won the lottery .. I might jump and cheer and exclaim how lucky I am as a term of phrase....but I would always just deem it as a matter of circumstance...

That's what I believe in anyway in my personal opinion.  [:)]

Yor_on, if you are going to make gross generalzations about the USA, you should expect to hear some equally ridiculous remarks about Sweden. I have lived in Europe and the USA. Have you?

Not lived in the states, traveled around for some months just. As for my reaction, as I said I find the the first saying ridiculous, and if there is something that is American then it's the 'selfmade man'. And that ain't something I created Geezer, it's an old expression.

Never mind, this reminds me too much of an conversation between roosters :)
Let's leave it, shall we?

Well, OK. You'll just have to wait till another time to hear my thoughts on ABBA and the self-made man that started IKEA.

Look Geezer, I haven't said that this phenomena is solely American. I meant just the oposite, that it is with that as with soldiers reminiscing. It presents a view of life as seen from their perspective, in no way validating it as the sole truth. And it was all written as a comment to the first one, the one that I'm 'allergic' too, trying to define just why I don't like it.

As for 'making it' and having a hard time while doing it. That's okay with me, it's just some of those sayings that sometimes drive me up the walls. You have to see it the way I thought I wrote it, not lifting the last comment out, standing on its own.

As for ABBA :)
And IKEA?

Well, did you know that the guy owning Ikea is..

Any way.

Be cool man, it's no slight intended to you, or others that fight, or fought, for their prosperity.
