Is it possible that Dragons were hunted to extinction thousands of years ago? They could have survived the KI disaster by taking to the seas.

dragons are mythical creatures and have never actually existed, although there is a branch of science (draconology )that is dedicated to them.
they appear in folklore all round the globe ,in many different forms, from good to bad.

The reason dragons are found in mythologies the world over is probably down to the fact that dinosaur bones have been found everywhere too, but were for a long time not understood for what they were. The Chinese for instance have been unearthing dinosaur bones for the last 2000 years, many of these 'dragon bones' being ground up as herbal remedies. I'm happy to report that China has since produced some of the world's top palaeontologists, and fossils there are now more often sold to them than broken up by their discoverers, so much has changed over the last few centuries.

There is a Leyend of Saint George and the Dragon that is very interesting because it makes me think that dragons were more than just imagination, that they did exist but were forgotten thru time. Most leyends hide within some truth.
-
Yeah. that is possible. i think that legend has something like 11% of fact in them. Or maybe St. George brought back dinosaur bones with him to a village and said that he killed one of them.?????

The idea that dragons acheived flight and fire breathing:
Flight: After digesting food, Hydrogen releasing bacteria began relesing hydrogen and this is collected in a flight bladder, similar to lungs. When enough hydrogen is gathered, the dragon would be light enough to acheive flight with aid to its wings which on its own did not provide enough lift.
Firebreath : There is a theory that dragons ingested platinum rich ores. The platinum, when in contact with hydrogen, combusts. While in flight, the dragon can only use so much of fire because it will use up its precious hydrogen that is vital for it to remain airborne.

Some people claim to have met real dragons during visits to astral planes during meditative trips to the spirit world......... and that is there answer as to where real dragon exist.
Men are the same as women, just inside out !
-
I really don't know much about astral planes etc., but I'm willing to go along with the dragon bone theory- the Romans used to have mines going pretty deep down and its extremely unlikely they were the first to do that, even 2000 years ago.
I can however definitively answer the question of George and the Dragon. It is a metaphor. Like most fantastic folk tales it was designed entirely to win over public opinion- the spin of the middle ages. The average IQ is 100 today, the average IQ of an alsatian dog being 65. Think about it.
The reason St George slayed a dragon is because he brought Christianity to the previously pagan British Isles.
Christianity is represented by St George.
Celtic religion is represented by the dragon.
St George slayed the dragon.
The exact same thing is told a few hundred years later about Ireland;
Christianity is represented by St Patrick.
Celtic religion is represented by snakes.
St Patrick chased all the snakes from Ireland.
In its simplest form this legend created the groundwork for such glorious Christian greetings as:
"She's a witch! Burn her! Chop her bleedin' head off!" etc. etc.
Spin. Thank you Catholicism. Thank you very much for murdering our ancestors and branding them monsters. Love thy neighbour.
-
Tanian,
What is your source for the Alsatian IQ of 65? I am very dubious of that.
The mind is like a parachute. It works best when open. -- A. Einstein
-
The legend symbolism is intersting and simple when taken literally. Any clues on the reality of the dragons? Why was the celtic religion denoted by a dragon?

And there was I thinking it was St Augustine who brought Christianity to these isles.
St. George, at least the one we regard as our patron saint, lived in the Middle East, and his legend was brought back to England with the return of the Crusaders from the holy land.

I saw the program and missed the intro where it was explained that it was not authentic. So I went through the whole program believing every single word since the presentation went about in a dead serious manner and I couldn't imagine the discovery channel putting on a hoax. LOL
-
Just go to Roswell, New Mexico! You can see dragons filming a fake moon landing there with Elvis starring as the first moon-walker. [;)]
I don't trust statistics. 98% of all statistics are just made up by someone anyway. [;)]
Dragons are real, though. and not just komodo dragons! There are also bearded dragons, snap dragons, and dragon fruit. [:p]

Check out the book "The First Fossil Hunters" by Adrian Mayor. It talks about fossils vs. dragon foklore. Great book. She also has a new one out called "Fossil Legends of the First Americans"

drogons most likely did exisit but during the dinasaur ages. But i highly doubt the breathed fire... other wise there milecullar structer would have to be totaly diffrent than any animal or any living thing for that matter

ur all barking mad. getting tired of hearing about dragons that might or might not have existed. what you like
everyone knows they do.lol
-
tanian, I find somthing in your degree of sarcasm to be offending. I have never heard of that as a greeting, and there are many honest christians that I know, including myself, who would never even think of doing that to anybody. A sad thing about history is the bad things tend to be remembered a lot easier than the good things, which, in many cases, outnumber the bad.
-
Your both saying the same thing in my opinion but from different sides. One (tanian) is says there are a lot of hypocrites, and the other (sci-guy) yeah but not all. your both right and I think, and believe, realatively the same thing: thou shall not kill, love thy enemy, turn the other cheek. I agree with both of you. So go argue with the hypocrites. Why argue with people you agree with. But I could be wrong and you are free to argue if you want to, its all arbitary.
